How to display a range of diffs
editThe following steps will produce a single link to show other editors the changes applied to a given article in successive edits, displayed as the complete range of diffs and including both before/after versions of the prose:
1. first copy the url of the diff of the last edit;
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Begotten_(film)&diff=931176842&oldid=931059850
2. then copy the url of the diff of the first edit;
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Begotten_(film)&diff=929230913&oldid=929230240
3. copy the value of the &diff= from the first edit: (e.g. 929230913);
4. and paste it into the ... &oldid= of the last edit.
How to overwrite a Redirect
edit[Copied from talk page posts exchanged on 21 February 2020 (UTC).]
Guidelines
editSee WP:REDIR (particularly WP:RTOA), and also WP:MOR and WP:USURPTITLE.
Method
edit- view the redirect page (for example: Heinjoki, which currently has:
#REDIRECT Veshchevo
); - click on edit and remove
#REDIRECT Veshchevo
; - apply 'draft' & 'in use' templates: Draft article, in use & under construction;
- copy the Finnish text, translate it and verify all sources/external links (probably over several edits);
- ensure it contains text about, and links to, Veshchevo;
- update talk page with translated page template;
- remove 'draft' & 'in use' templates.
Hello, Pdebee. I'm happy to help out, though the answer to the above is that yes, that overwriting should work fine. Ping me if you need help though, and thanks for translating articles. Boleyn (talk) 16:42, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
How to fix a "misdirecting" Redirect
editIn cases where a Redirect page about a term (such as daysman in its meaning of labourer) links in error to an article that therefore becomes misleading (such as Adjudicator, a different meaning of the word daysman) and if the term being redirected doesn't warrant its own article, then this is the solution I learned (on 2 June 2020) from Boleyn:
- Search for a disambiguation page that is a close homophone of the redirected term (Dayman in this case);
- Insert a disambiguation page entry for the redirected term, as follows:
*Daysman (disambiguation)
, into the homophone's existing dab page; - Create a new dab page for the redirected term:
Daysman (disambiguation)
, and type the following wikitext on the first line:#REDIRECT Daysman
(21 characters); note that a bot will soon thereafter add an R template); - Overwrite the Redirect page (that was pointing to the misleading article, Adjudicator) with the wikitext required in the new dab page (Daysman (disambiguation)), including a “Wikt” template (8 characters) on the first line and a “dab” template (7 characters) on the last line;
- Insert (in the new dab page), a See also section pointing back to the homophone's dab page;
- In an existing article (Day labor) closely related to the (previously) redirected term, add content to provide the term as a synonym, and include a ref tag to its dictionary definition;
- In the misleading article (Adjudicator), add content to explain the (alternative) meaning of the (previously) redirected term.
Very many thanks once again; Boleyn!
How to create a shortcut in the MoS
editSometimes, a (sub-)section in the Manual of Style could benefit from having its own shortcut. Here's one I created on 5 January 2020, for MOS:IMOS BIOPLACE:
1. First create a redirect page and insert the following code:
#REDIRECT Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Ireland-related articles#Place of birth, death etc. R to section R from shortcut R to project namespace
2. Insert the shortcut template naming the redirect page, immediately under the section heading to which the shortcut will apply (see here).
MOS:IMOS BIOPLACE
How to apply to the Wikipedia Library for access to the BNA
editWhen requiring free access to an online database (British Newspaper Archive, for example) available through the Wikipedia Library, first consult your list of sites for which access has already been granted to you, by clicking on:
https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/my_library/ (or use existing shortcut on desktop).
If the required site is not included, then:
1. click on: https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/138/
2. complete the application [see Word doc "20230509 Application to the Wikipedia Library" in "My Wikipedia" folder on desktop]
3. wait for feedback at your Wikipedia email address (pdebee@...etc.)
4. follow instructions (click on supplied link and enter voucher code)
5. follow registration instructions (including BNA login 'email address' and 'password')
6. login and use BNA search facilities.
To renew after one year:
1. go to: https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/users/my_library/
2. find BNA under 'My Collections'
3. click the 'Extend' button.
This will send a request to renew your access for another year, so someone can assign you a fresh voucher code.
How to request a review of your draft by a volunteer at the Guild of Copy Editors
editTo request a review of your draft by someone at the Guild of Copy Editors, all you have to do is:
- click here: Requests,
- scroll down to/click on the "Submit a Request" button, which opens the request page,
- copy the "CCN: C-class nomination" words from the top table (to paste it later),
- scroll down to the editable text at the bottom of that page,
- replace "Articlename" with:
User:Sarah for SF/Sam Feldman draft|Sam Feldman
, within the double brackets, - type your comments under the heading and paste "CCN: C-class nomination" somewhere within those comments,
- leave the tildes in place so that your signature is appended to the request,
- scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on 'Publish changes', as usual.
