The Importance of Fine Arts in Education

edit

Elliot W. Eisner once said "the arts' position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important". Fine arts is mostly seen as painting and drawing, and not a subject that can be studied by an academic scholar. Fine arts expand the boundaries of learning for the students and encourage creative thinking and a deeper understanding of the core subjects, which are language, arts, math, science, and social studies. Teachers need to add all times of fine arts, which include, theater, visual art, dance, and music, into their lesson plans because the arts gives the students motivational tools to unlock a deeper understanding of their education.[1]

It is observed that children who are engaged in art activities, develop a better understanding of other subjects, right from languages to geography to even science. There following are the possible outcomes of having arts in schools:

People Skills

edit

The importance of art education can be seen from the fact that when engaging in art activities children get a better understanding of human nature. These children develop sensitivity and become more considerate enough to think from the other's point of view. They starts respecting other people's feelings and thoughts.

Critical Thinking and Communication Skills

edit

A child's intelligence can be developed through arts. Studies have shown that art exposure can promote brain activity. Problem solving is also achieved. He or she can also learn how to convey his/her thoughts and ideas in numerous ways. During art classes, various pieces of art are discussed in detail. This discussion makes the students capable of expressing themselves well during debates or in speech classes.[2]

The importance of Fine arts in education can be understood from the fact that the whole of human history that we know of today, has been planted in us through different art forms such as literature, music, visual arts, dance and drama. Art can bring life to imagination. So to conclude it can be said Fine arts can uplift a child's social, personal and emotional development.
