"OttomanJackson/Money"
Song

Money is a song by Michael Jackson from the album HIStory.

Background edit

The seventh track on HIStory, Money was written and produced entirely by Jackson. In "Money," he whispers, "You'll do anything for money,"[1] apparently directed at the father of the boy who made the 1993 molestation charges, and to whom Jackson paid a multi-million dollar settlement.[2]The boy later admitted to lying for money. [3] According to the Allegheny Times, in Money "Jackson rails against people who will 'lie for it.'"[4] The song also appears on 1997 compilation album Blood on the Dance Floor: History in the Mix as a radio edit version by the house music band Fire Island.

Composition edit

The song is four minutes and fourty-four seconds long and is credited as being a Pop/Funk/Hip-hop song. It is performed at a tempo of 103 bpm, and the Fire Island Radio Edit is performed at a tempo of 114 bpm.[5]. It is in the key of F minor.[6]

Critical Reception edit

Adam Gilham, a Sputnik Music critic, gave the song a two out of five star rating and described it as "a very boring track with a very boring, almost monotone beat running through the verses." He also said that "the song actually has a quite good chorus when it finally comes," but felt that it was one of the album's weakest tracks.[7] Fred Shuster of the Daily News of Los Angeles described "Money", as well as "This Time Around" and "D.S." as "superb slices of organic funk that will fuel many of the summer's busiest dance floors".[8] Jim Farber of the New York Daily News said that Money "boasts one of the few bass lines fleshy enough to make you want to move along."[9] According to Loudon Wainwright III of Entertainment Weekley, in Money, an unspecified they "kill for the green stuff."[10]
