The United Hospitals Lawn Tennis Club,(UH Tennis), part of the united hospitals sports collaboration, represents the five medical schools in London, each of whom have their own distinct tennis clubs but also have members selected to represent the UHLTC team. The club exists to encourage and facilitate tennis at these institutions. It is perhaps most notable for holding the UH men's inter college club league, which is regarded as the second oldest club league in the world.

History

edit

The United Hospitals Lawn Tennis Club is the collective representation of the now 5 combined London medical schools tennis teams -these include - Barts and the London, Imperial College London, St Georges University London, University College London (RUMS) and Kings College London(GKT). The Club hosts a league between the medical schools- both men's and mixed doubles as well as a Cup competition each November. The Club's notability arises from the men's league competition which dates back to 1887 and is regarded as the second oldest tennis tournament in the world, starting only 10 years after the Wimbledon Championships. It is at the All England Club that the UHLTC holds it's Annual General Meeting. There is also a club team which has constituent members from each of the participating schools. The team competes as the UH tennis side against a variety of other clubs most notably against the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, The Queens Club and the Royal Armed Forces tennis teams. Notable alumni of the Club include Professor Setchell and Professor Mortimer (current president).

United Hospitals League Cup

edit

Dating back to 1887[1] it is now competed for by the 5 participating medical colleges. The competition takes place during the spring season with the final being concluded in early June. The format consists of a round robin style tournament with the two highest scoring teams replaying each other in the final. The Cup is awarded the following October at the UHLTC AGM at the All England Club.[2] The Cup was lost for a 30 year period during the latter of the twentieth century but has subsequently been discovered. The 2012-2013 tournament year was decided without a victor due to a fixtures discrepancy. The cup was thus not awarded for the first time, as reported in the medical student newspaperCite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page). November 2013.

Present state

edit

The league originally consisted of all 13 London Medical schools, however due to various mergers there now remain only 5. Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, Westminster Hospital Medical School, St Mary's Hospital Medical School and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School all combined to form Imperial College London School of Medicine in 1997; St Thomas's Hospital Medical School, Guy's Hospital Medical School and King's College Medical School all combined to form Kings College London school of Medicine in 1998; Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University College Hospital Medical School and the Royal Free Hospital Medical School all combined to form UCL medical school in 1998/2008; St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College and The London Hospital Medical College combined to form Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry whilst St George's Medical school became St Georges University of London in 2005.
