Alamo Square

The Alamo Square neighborhood is the area surrounding Alamo Square Park, roughly betwen Fillmore Street, Divisadero Street, Oak Sreet. and Golden Gate Avenue. Hayes Valley is to the east.

Anza Vista

Anza Vista is a small neighborhood south and east of the intersection of Geary Boulevard and Masonic Avenue. The University of San Francisco campus is to the west, and the Western Addition neighborhood is to the east. Wallenberg High School is on the western side of the neighborhood, a small shopping center is located in the north eastern corner and a Kaiser Permanente Hospital is on the north side.

Ashbury Heights

Ashbury Heights is a neighborhood on the hill to the south of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, east of Stanyan Street, north of Belgrave Avenue and west of Clayton Street. Tank Hill is located in the southeast corner of Ashbury Heights.

Balboa Park

The Balboa Park neighborhood is the area around the Balboa Park public park on San Jose Avenue north of Ocean Avenue. The neighborhood is roughly situated in the area between Interstate 280 to the west and north, Geneva Avenue to the south and Mission Street to the east. The Bay Area Rapid Transit Balboa Park Station is located in the southwest corner of the neighborhood.

The names Cayuga and Mission Terrace might also be used to describe this area.

Bayview

The Bayview stretches along Third Street south of Evans Avenue, west of the Hunter's Point neighborhood. The Waden Library is located on Third Street, between Quesada and Revere.

Bernal Heights

Bernal Heights is a neighborhood built on the hill that makes up Bernal Heights Park. Mission Street is to the west, Cesar Chaves Street is to the north, US Highway 101 is to the east and Interstate 280 is to the south. The Bernal Heights Library is located on Cortland Avenue, between Andover and Moultrie.

Buena Vista

The Buena Vista neighborhood is to the south of Buena Vista Park and the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Market Street is to the south, and Corono Heights Park and neighborhood is to the east.

Castro

The Castro is the heart of San Francisco's gay community, located along Castro Street to the south of Market Street. Eureka Valley is to the west of The Castro, and Noe Valley is to the south. The Muni Metro Castro Street Station and the terminus of the F Market streetcar line are both at the intersection of Market and Castro.

Cathedral Hill

Cathedral Hill is a small area in the Western Addition neighborhood surrounding Saint Mary's Cathedral on Geary Boulevard near Gough Street.

China Basin

China Basin is a neighborhood built on landfill along the San Francisco Bay. It is south of Mission Creek and the Mission Bay neighborhood, and north of the Dogpatch neighborhood. AT&T Park is across Mission Creek, and the new UCSF campus is being built north of 16th Street.

Chinatown

Chinatown is a Chinese community popular with tourists to the south of North Beach and west of the Financial District. It is centered around Stockton Street and Grant Avenue, north of Sacramento Street and south of Broadway. Chinatown Library is located on Washington Street, near Powell.

Civic Center

Civic Center is the name given to the area between Market Street and Van Ness Avenue to the south of Golden Gate Avenue, where there are many city, state and federal level government buildings, including City Hall.

Clarendon Heights

The Clarendon Heights neighborhood is in the central part of San Francisco, to the north of Twin Peaks and east of Mount Sutro. It stretches down to Corbett Avenue or Market Street, and Clarendon Avenue borders the north and west side.

Cole Valley

Cole Valley is a small neighborhood centered around Cole Street to the south of the Cole Valley. The western end of the Sunset Tunnel used by the N Judah Muni Metro line is on Carl Street to the east of Cole Street.

Corona Heights

The Corona Heights neighborhood surrounds the Corona Heights hill and park, south of Buena Vista Park and west of the Duboce Triangle. The Randall Museum is located at the end of Museum Way, in Corona Heights Park.

Cow Hollow

Cow Hollow is a neighborhood to the south of the Marina District, centered around Union Street between The Presidio and Russian Hill. Golden Gate Valley Library on Green Street at Octavia.

Crocker-Amazon

Crocker-Amazon is a neighborhood along the southern edge of San Francisco, bordered by Mission Street to the west and Geneva Avenue to the north. Crocker-Amazon Playground is located on Geneva Ave to the east of Moscow Street, in McLaren Park.

Diamond Heights

Diamond Heights is a neighborhood located atop the hills between Noe Valley and Glen Canyon Park. The San Francisco Police Department's police academy is located in Diamond Heights, on Turquoise Way near Amber Drive.

Dogpatch

The Dogpatch neighborhood is on the eastern edge of San Francisco, bordering the San Francisco Bay. China Basin is to the north, and Potrero Hill and Interstate 280 are to the east.

Dolores Heights

The Dolores Heights neighborhood is built on top of a hill that is to the south of Dolores Park, west of the Mission District, east of The Castro and north of Noe Valley.

Duboce Triangle

Duboce-Triangle is a triangle-shaped neighborhood south of the Haight-Fillmore neighborhood and north of The Castro, San Francisco, California. It is in the area north of Market Street, east of Castro Street and south of Duboce Avenue. The Muni Metro Church Street Station is located at the intersection of Market and Church, and the Castro Street Station is at Market and Castro. The eastern end of the N Judah's Sunset Tunnel is next to Duboce Park on Duboce and Noe.

Embarcadero

The Embarcadero is the area of waterfront built on landfill along San Francisco Bay roughly between the Bay Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf. The Bay Area Rapid Transit and Muni Metro Embarcadero Station is located under Market Street between Main and Beale.

Eureka Valley

Eureka Valley is the area surrounding The Castro, mainly to the south and to the west. Market Street runs along the north and west side of Eureka Valley, Noe Valley is to the south and the hill that the Dolores Heights neighborhood is on is to the east. Kite Hill Park is located in the western part of the neighborhood.

Excelsior

The Excelsior District is a neighborhood in southern San Francisco with Mission Street on the west side, Geneva Avenue to the south, Silver Avenue to the north and McLaren Park to the east. Streets in the Excelsior going north-south are named after cities, and streets going east-west are named after countries.

Fillmore

The Fillmore is a subdivision of the Western Addition neighborhood stretching along Fillmore Street south of Geary Boulevard and Japantown to Grove Steet. The Fillmore Auditorium is located on Fillmore Street at Geary.

Financial District

The Financial District is the central business district of San Francisco, located to the north of Market Street, west of The Embarcadero and east of Chinatown. The two tallest buildings in the city, the Bank of America Building and the Transamerica Pyramid are located in the Financial Distrct.

Fisherman's Wharf

Fisherman's Wharf is a neighborhood and popular tourist destination along the northern waterfront of San Francisco. It is the area north of North Point St between Fort Mason/Aquatic Park and The Embarcadero. Ghirardelli Square, Pier 39 and the terminus of the F Market streetcar line are all located inside of Fisherman's Wharf.

Forest Hill

Forest Hill is an affluent neighborhood at the base of the hills to the west of Twin Peaks, San Francisco, California. It is bordered by Laguna Honda Boulevard to the east, Dewey Boulevard to the south, Golden Gate Heights to the northwest and West Portal to the southwest. Laguna Honda Hospital and the Muni Metro Forest Hill Station (San Francisco) are both located on Laguna Honda Boulevard near the intersection with Dewey Boulevard.

Forest Knolls

Forest Knolls is built on the southwestern side of Mount Sutro, near the main UCSF campus. Warren Drive is the southern and western border of Forest Knolls, Mount Sutro is the northern border and the Midtown Terrace neighborhood is to the east.

Glen Park

Glen Park is a neighborhood to the north of Interstate 280 and San Jose Avenue, east of Glen Canyon Park and south of Diamond Heights. The Bay Area Rapid Transit Glen Park Station is located at the corner of Bosworth Street and Diamond Street.

Golden Gate Heights

Golden Gate Heights (Sometimes called Sunset Heights) is a hilly neighborhood south of the Inner Sunset and northwest of Forest Hill. It is roughly bordered by Kirkham Street to the north, Quintara Street to the south, 8th Avenue to the east and 17th Avenue to the west. Grand View Park is a park on a hill on the northern side of the neighborhood, and Golden Gate Heights Park is a park on a hill on the southern side of the neighborhood.

Haight-Ashbury

The Haight-Ashbury (Also known as The Haight) is a neighborhood centered around the intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets. It is a popular tourist destination known for its role as a center of the hippie movement of the 1960s. The Panhandle is to the north of the Haight-Ashbury, Golden Gate Park is to the west, Buena Vista Park is to the east and the Ashbury Heights neighborhood is to the south.

Haight-Fillmore

The Haight-Follmore (Or Lower Haight) is a neighborhood centered around Haight Street at Fillmore Street. The Duboce Triangle neighborhood is to the south of the Haight-Fillmore and Hayes Valley is to the north.

Hayes Valley

Hayes Valley is a neighborhood along Hayes Street to the east of Alamo Square. The Central Freeway used to run through Hayes Valley, but it was torn down following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and was replaced by Octavia Boulevard in 2005.

Hunter's Point

Hunter's Point is the area to the east of Third Street and the Bayview District, near the San Francisco Naval Shipyard.

India Basin

India Basin is a small area bordering the San Francisco Bay to the north of Hunter's Point and to the east of the east of Third Street. There are multiple parks in India Basin along the Bay's shoreline.

Ingleside

The Ingleside neighborhood is located in the south western part of San Francisco, near City College. It is bordered by Ocean Avenue to the north, Interstate 280 and San Jose Avenue to the east, Lakeview Avenue to the south and Ashton Avenue to the west. The Ingleside Library is located on Ocean Avenue, and the Bay Area Rapid Transit Balboa Park Station is located at the eastern edge of the neighborhood on Geneva Avenue and San Jose.

Ingleside Terrace

Ingleside Terrace is a small, affluent neighborhood built atop the former location of the Ingleside Racetrack. It is adjacent to the Ingleside neighborhood, bordered by Ocean Avenue to the north, Ashton Avenue to the east, Holloway Avenue to the south and Junipero Serra Boulevard to the west. There is a large sundial located on Entrada Court in Ingleside Terrace.

Inner Sunset

The Inner Sunset is the north eastern-most corner of the Sunset District. It is centered around the commercial on 9th Avenue and Irving Street. It is west of the UCSF medical center, south of Golden Gate Park and north of Golden Gate Heights.

Japantown

Japantown is a small neighborhood containing many Japan-themed stores and a large shopping center. It is located in the six-block area north of Geary Boulevard, east of Fillmore Steet, south of Sutter Steet and west of Laguna Steet. The Western Addition neighborhood is to the south of Japantown, and Pacific Heights is to the north.

Laguna Honda

Laguna Honda (Or Forest Hill Extension) is a small neighborhood between Forest Hill and Mount Davidson. Laguna Honda Hospital and the Muni Metro Forest Hill Station are both located at the north east corner of Laguna Honda near the intersection of Laguna Honda Boulevard and Dewey Boulevard. School of the Arts high school is in the south east corner of the neighborhood on Portola Drive.

Lakeside

Lakeside is a long, narrow neighborhood between 19th Avenue (California State Route 1) and Junipero Serra Boulevard to the south of Sloat Boulevard. San Francisco State University and the Stonestown Galleria shopping mall are both located on 19th Avenue, and the Merced Library is loked in the Lakeside on Stonecrest Drive at Mercedes Way.

Laurel Heights

Laurel Heights is a neighborhood to the south of the Presidio and east of the Richmond District. It is bordered by Geary Boulevard or the University of San Francisco campus to the south, Arguello Boulevard to the west, California Street to the north and Presidio Avenue to the east. The Luarel Village shopping center is located on California between Laurel and Spruce, the California Pacific Medical Center is on California between Arguello and Maple, and a UCSF campus is located in the north eastern corner of the neighborhood.

Little Hollywood

Little Hollywood is a small neighborhood in the south eastern edge of San Francisco. It is centered around Blanken Avenue between Bayshore Boulevard and US Highway 101. Little Hollywood Park is located on Lathrop Avenue, and the Bayshore Caltrain station is just south of the neighborhood, on Tunnel Avenue.

Little Saigon

Little Saigon is a Vietnamese community centered around Larkin Street in the Tenderloin neighborhood.

Marina District

The Marina District is a neighborhood built on landfill in northern San Francisco bordering the San Francisco Bay known for the damade it sustained in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. It was the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and the Palace of Fine Arts from the Exposition is located on Baker Street. The Marina is bordered by the Bay to the north, the Presidio to the west, Lombard Street (US Highway 101) to the south and Van Ness Avenue to the east. Fort Mason is in the north east corner of the Marina, and the Marina Library is located in the George Mascone Recreation Center on Chestnut Street.

Merced Heights

Merced Heights is a neighborhood in the south western part of the city, west of the Ingleside and Oceanview neighborhoods. It is bordered to the south by Brotherhood Way, to the west by Junipero Serra Boulevard, to the north by Holloway Avenue, and to the east by Orizaba Avenue. The Oceanview Library is located on Randolph Street at Ramsell Street, and there are two public parks on Shields Avenue. One is at Arch Street, and the other is at Byxbee Street.

Merced Manor

Merced Manor is a neighborhood in south western San Francisco, between Stern Grove and Lake Merced. It is bordered by 19th Avenue (California State Route 1) to the east, Sloat Boulevard and Crestlake Drive to the north, Skyline Boulevard to the west and Eucalyptus Drive and Lake Merced Boulevard to the south. Lowell High School is located on Eucalyptus Drive, and the Merced Manor reservoir is on Sloat between 22nd and 23rd Avenues. The Stonestown Galleria shopping mall and San Francisco State University are both on the 19th Avenue to the south of Merced Manor.

Midtown Terrace

Midtown Terrace is a neighborhood in the central side of San Francisco, on the western slope of Twin Peaks. Panorama Drive runs through it, between Clarendon Avenue and Twin Peaks Boulevard. Sutro Tower is on the northern side of Midtown Terrace, and the Midtown Terrace Recreation Center is on Olympia Way at Clarendon.

Miraloma Park

The Miraloma Park neighborhood is in the central part of San Francisco, between Glen Canyon Park and Mount Davidson. Portola Drive borders Miraloma Park to the north, and the Sunnyside is to the south. Miraloma Playground is located on Omar Way at Rockdale, and Sunnyside Playground is south of Teresita Boulevard near Foerster Street.

North of the Panhandle

North of the Panhandle (Or North Panhandle) is the area to the north of Golden Gate Park's Panhandle. It is bordered by Fell Street to the south, Golden Gate Park and Stanyan Street to the west, the University of San Francisco campus and Turk Street to the north and Divisadero Street to the east. Saint Mary's Hospital is located in the neighborhood on Hayes Street between Stanyan and Shrader.

Oceanview

The Oceanview neighborhood is located in southern San Francisco, south of the Ingleside neighborhood and City College. It is bordered by Interstate 280 to the south and east, Lakeview Avenue to the north and Orizaba Avenue to the west. Oceanview Playground and Recreation Center is located in the middle of the neighborhood, between Plymouth, Capitol, Lobos and Montana.

Parkside

Parkside is the southern part of the Sunset District, mainly south of Quintara Street between 19th Avenue and Sunset Boulevard. Abraham Lincoln High School is located on 24th Avenue, and the Parkside Library is located on Taraval Street at 23rd Avenue. Stern Grove borders the neighborhood to the south.

Polk Gulch

Polk Gulch is the commercial section of Polk Street roughly between California Street to the south and Union Street to the north. The lower part of the Russian Hill and Nob Hill neighborhoods are to the east, and Pacific Heights is to the west.

Portola

Portola is a neighborhood in the south eastern part of San Francisco, north east of McLaren Park. It is roughly bordered by San Bruno Avenue and US Highway 101 to the east, Mansell Street to the south, University Street to the west and Interstate 280 to the north. Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School is located on Mansell Street, and the Portola Library is at Silver Avenue and San Bruno.

Presidio Heights is a small, affluent neighborhood between the Presidio and Laurel Heights neighborhood. It is bordered by Pacific Street and the Presidio to the north, Arguello Boulevard to the east, California Street to the south and Lyon Street to the east. California Pacific Medical Center is located on California between Arguello and Maple, and the Presidio Library is at Sacramento and Lyon.

Sherwood Forest is a small neighborhood on the south western slop of Mount Davidson. It is in the area with Dalewood way to the north and east and Lansdale Avenue to the south and west.

Silver Terrace

Silver Terrace is a neighborhood in the south eastern corner of San Francisco, between the Bayview and Portola neighborhoods. It is roughly bordered by Third Street to the east, Palou Avenue and Silver Avenue to the north, Williams Avenue to the south and Bayshore Boulevard and US Highway 101 to the west. A tunnel used by Caltrain runs under Silver Terrace.

Sunnyvale is a small neighborhood located between McLaren Park and the Cow Palace. It is bordered by Geneva Avenue to the south, Sawyer Street to the east, Sunnyvale Avenue to the north and McLaren Park to the west.

Sunset District

Telegraph Hill

Telegraph Hill is a hill and the neighborhood built on top of it in the north eastern corner of San Francisco. It is roughly bordered by Sansome Street on the east, Francisco Street to the north, Powell Street and Columbus Avenue to the west and Vallejo Street to the south. Coit Tower is located at the summit of Telegraph Hill.

University Mound is a neighborhood to the north of McLaren Park. It is roughly bordered by Silver Avenue to the north, University Street to the east, McLaren Park to the south and Madison Street to the west. Many of the streets running north-south in University Mound are named after universities.

Upper Market

Upper Market is the area between the southern end of Market Street and Twin Peaks mainly spanning Corbett Avenue and Burnett Avenue. Clayton Street is on the north side of Upper Market, and Portola Drive is to the south.

Westwood Highlands is a small neighborhood to the north east of the intersection of Monterey Boulevard and Plymouth Avenue. The Westwood Park neighborhood is to the south, Saint Francis Wood is to the west, Sherwood Forest is to the north and the Sunnyside is to the east.
