Chanel Dupree is a fictional character from Days of Our Lives, played by rapper turned actress, Precious Way. The cousin of established character Lani Price-Grant (Sal Stowers), Chanel was introduced in 2021, shortly after her mother, Paulina Price, played by legendary actress Jackée Harry.

Storylines

Chanel arrives in Salem and immediately befriends Claire Brady (Isabel Durant) and Tripp Dalton (Lucas Adams).[1] However, things turn sour when Chanel tries to stick them with her bill at the town square. Before she can escape, Chanel runs into Paulina and Lani, after she tries to run away from Lani's cop husband Eli Grant (Lamon Archey). Chanel confronts her mother about freezing her credit cards and Paulina informs Chanel that she has to get a job.[2] Chanel then runs into her ex-boyfriend Theo Carver (Cameron Johnson). Though she is happy to see him and wants to catch up, Theo rushes off. Theo ultimately rejects Chanel when he realizes that she's only interested in reuniting because her mom has cut her off. Chanel then bonds with Xander Kiriakis (Paul Telfer) who is mourning his broken engagement. Assuming Xander is the CEO of Titan Industries, Chanel marries Xander assuming she has hit the jackpot. Chanel is horrified to discover Xander is actually broke and plans to end the marriage when Xander convinces her that he'll only agree to divorce if Paulina pays him off. Chanel only agrees when Xander suggest they split the payout evenly. Chanel informs Lani that Xander will only agree to divorce in exchange for $10 million.

Creation and casting

In December 2020, Harry announced that she was set to join the cast of Days of Our Lives.[3] The actress also revealed that her character has a daughter.[4] On February 2, 2021, Blackfilm.com announced that Way had been cast in the role of Chanel, the daughter of Harry's Paulina.[5] Chanel marked Way's very first acting role.[6] The show's official Twitter account said "Get ready, Salem. A new family is arriving."[7] Way was slated to debut in late March 2021.[8] Chanel made her debut on March 25, 2021.[9]

In an interview with Soap Opera Digest, Way expressed her excitement during the audition process. "Everything's been so crazy with Covid, and I put up a self-tape audition and I had so much doing it because I really loved the scene and I felt very free." Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the audition was one of Way's first chances "to get dressed up, so I went all out for my tape! I put on sparkly dress, and it gave me an excuse to put on some makeup and feel cute." With a friend's help, Way recording her audition and sent it to the casting department. After a few more auditions, Way finally booked the role. Way also revealed that her late grandmother loved "her stories." While she was too young to remember which soap her grandmother watched, when she booked the role, Way said "This is a special thing from me to her." Before she told anyone about the casting, Way's sister told her that Days of Our Lives was their grandmother's favorite soap and then emotionally shared the news. "How does that even happen? How does it work out like that?" [10] On June 10, 2021, it was announced that Way would vacate the role.[11] According to Kambra Clifford, Way had booked Partners in Rhyme opposite MC Lyte in the fall of 2020, but it was not known if that was the reason for her departure.[12] Way vacated the role on July 5, 2021.[13]

It was announced that Bowens would step into the role beginning July 6.[11] Bowen began taping on April 1, 2021, just days after Way's onscreen debut.[14]

Introduction

Way said that Chanel would bring "all kinds of trouble" to Salem. But as far as Chanel is concerned, "it's good, fun trouble."[10] Once Paulina cuts Chanel off, their already "sparky relationship" is further strained. Carlivati said "Chanel acts out in some very outrageous and fun ways and Lani and Eli are caught in the middle of this."[20] While Way battled some nerves due on her "whirlwind" first day, she was just relieved to be out of the house. "I'm out of the house with purpose" And "as soon as I got on stage, I had no room to be nervous because it was going so fast." However, Way found that the swift production helped her a lot as it forces her to be "quick in [her] acting choices." The newcomer immediately clicked with her co-stars Stowers and Harry.[10] Harry said "I'm trying to help Precious along and help her get acclimated as much as I can."[6]
