edit

In 1981, Sergeant Abe Carver is introduced as he investigates the disappearance of David Banning (Gregg Marx) who was charged with shooting Alex Marshall (Quinn Redeker).[1] Meanwhile, as Abe awaits his girlfriend Valerie Grant (Diane Sommerfield) who has seemingly stood him up, he gets a tip that Nick Corelli (George Jenesky) is harboring the fugitive Banning at his bar. Abe arrives to find Nick unconscious and rushes him to the hospital. When he wakes up, Nick reveals that David shot him and ran off with Valerie. Abe furiously confronts Valerie and warns her she could be arrested for aiding and abetting, though he doesn't arrest her.[2]

Casting

edit

When Reynolds was invited to auditioned, he thought "Well, nobody else has offered me any show this week so I think I'll take this one! The part of Abe was very well written, which surprised me."[35] In a 2017 interview, Reynolds revealed that he had been hearing about the role for a while before he agreed to audition. At the time, Reynolds had another offer and he had recently wrapped a primetime series. "There was a lot going on, so I had to let that role kind of sit for a while." Days of Our Lives had met with a lot of actors for the role, "but they were interested in seeing me." At the audition, the casting director inquired if Reynolds had any issue remembering lines. "I had never worked on a soap so I didn't realize the significance of the question." While memorizing was not an issue, Reynolds had not realized he would be learning new material daily. By the time he got home, he was quickly invited to come back a two days later for a producer session, on a Friday. After reading for producers, Reynolds was offered the role which would start on Monday. "An hour later, someone knocked on the door and handed me six scripts."[36]

Linda Hersch described Abe as "gruff or stiff" in 1982.[35]

Backstory

edit

According to Reynolds, the Carvers are a large family consisting of 5 siblings. Three boys, Abe, Theo and Jonah. There are also two sisters, one of which is Karen.[39]

Introduction

edit

Reynolds was relieved to be embraced by costars such as Jed Allan, John Clarke, Macdonald Carey and Deidre Hall, all of whom had been on the series for years. They "were so helpful" he said of his cast mates.[35]

The character was introduced as part of the Salem Strangler plot in which a serial killer terrorizes the town.[36]

Reception

edit

Hersch said Reynolds was an "instant favorite" with female viewers because he was "strikingly attractive." Only a year into his tenure, based on fan mail and fan encounters, Reynolds gaged that Abe had become quite popular. "Most of his fan mail comes from women who adore him" Hersch stated.[35]

2004 Supporting actor nomination.[43]

[44]

Reynolds historic win made him the third Black actor to win the award, and only the second Days actor to win since the show's original leading man, Macdonald Carey.[45]
