Penny was born in Braidwood, NSW

Her father was born near Braidwood in 1910 and served with the Light Horse in WW I

Her mother's name was Irene who was born in Western NSW. Her family were avid horse racing followers It was Irene that inspired Penny's TV series The Track. Irene's brother was a jockey who died in Cobar in 1930.

TV series RAN (Remote Area nurse) was inspired by her Penny's sister Peta, who was a Remote Area Nurse.

RAN (Remote Area Nurse) TV series inspired by younger sister Peta who was a nurse at an indigenous community at Kuranda, Qld.

Penny was at the ABC as Head of Drama, then Head of Television for 9 years. She left the ABC in 1998. Around this time the idea for RAN was germinating. Previous to time at ABC she was at the Australian Film Commission.

As at time of Sydney Morning Herald article, Penny was living and working in a Petersham warehouse.
