Suresh Samuel David (born March 22, 1959) is an Indian physician specializing in emergency medicine and the medical director and head of the department of emergency at Pushpagiri Medical College, Tiruvalla. The first Indian physician to be formally trained in emergency medicine, David is credited with founding the department of emergency medicine at Christian Medical College, Vellore. He authored Handbook of Emergency Medicine, the first text on emergency medicine by an Indian author. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London and a recipient of Best Doctor Award of Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University. He has also received a citation, Leadership in Emergency Medicine, from A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, a former president of India.

Suresh Samuel David is an Emergency Physician.He is the senior most emergency physician in India with 27 years of experience in the field of emergency medicine. At present he is the medical director and head of the Emergency Department at Pushpagiri Medical College, Tiruvalla.[4] In 1994, he returned to India after 3 years residency in emergency medicine from Australia[5] as the first formally trained Indian emergency physician and established a separate Department of Emergency Medicine in Christian Medical College, Vellore.[6][7][8] He received the Best Doctor Award on July 1, 2012 by MGR Medical University, Chennai. Education and Career

After completing MBBS from Christian Medical College, Vellore in 1982,a 1500-bedded Hospital, his Alma Mater and the top private medical university in India, he joined Christian Mission Hospital, Dharapuram, Tamilnadu. He then joined Madras Medical College, Chennai in 1985 for a full-time residential postgraduate advanced training in General Surgery,then worked in Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College, Karakkonam, Kerala – India a rural secondary level Mission Hospital. After three years of Advanced Training in Emergency Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Adelaide, Australia which is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, he returned to India and started the first Emergency department at Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu in 1994.[6][7][8] He has been Senior consultant and Head of Emergency Department, Christian Medical College, Vellore for 22 years.[11][12][13] He received Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, Sydney, Australia in 2006, Phd from Madras University, Chennai in 2013 and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London – UK in 2013.He strived hard for the recognition of Emergency medicine in India.[14][15] He is a resource person in the field of disaster management, for the East Asia Summit Earthquake Risk Reduction Centre, New Delhi, NIDM.[16]

Academic leadership roles

Dr Suresh David was the Chairman of the Academic Commitee for the National conference of EM India - SEMICON 2017 March 17–19, Kochi , India. This was a rapid PG refresher course for doctors and Post graduate students in the field of Emergency Medicine. With around 30 hand picked faculties from all over India and 60 lecture topics this was organised.[25] He has been the key note speaker in various programmes one if the recent ones being, in SEMICON 2016 Team work & Boundaries in Patient care[26] He was part of EM CONCLAVE 2013.[27] Dr Suresh David was Chairman, Scientific Committee- International Conference of Emergency Medicine, Chennai, September 2007. He was the Organising Secretary – 7 th National Conference of Emergency medicine – EMCON 2005 – Vellore, India.[28][29] He was the Chairman, Scientific & Research Committee, International Conference of Emergency Medicine - Hyderabad, September 25–27, 2002. He is the founder and the Chief instructor for Early Management of Trauma Course. He is also the Co-ordinator and instructor- Second Regional Workshop on Early Management of Trauma, Christian Medical College-Vellore, November 13–14, 1998. He was the Organising Secretary and instructor - First Regional Workshop on Early Management of Trauma Christian Medical College-Vellore, Dec- 20 1997[30] Faculty of National Trauma Management course, NTMC.[31] Dr Suresh David and the institution team he has been working with have volunteered and helped during tsunami and the recent cuddalore floods in Tamil Nadu, India.[32][33]

Contributions in the field of Emergency Medicine in India

In 1994 Dr S David returned to India after 3 years of training in Emergency Medicine from Australia as the first formally trained Indian Emergency Physician.He re-engineered the emergency department at Christian medical college,Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India and transformed a 28-bedded “casualty” to a full-fledged department of Accident and Emergency Medicine. Presently,it is a 40-bedded autonomous academic clinical unit - the largest Emergency Department in India, in the private sector.[5][34] In 1995 he authored the first Handbook of Emergency Medicine in India.[18] He instituted the concept of standardised Emergency Care in Vellore. In 1996 he organised the first nurse-led triage system in India. He introduced the concept of "Trauma Team" and instituted the first Trauma Team in India at the CMC Vellore. He is the Founder-member of International Trauma Anaesthesia and Critical Care (ITACCS) Indian Chapter. He was invited to represent India at the International Conference of ITACCS in the USA and delivered the guest lecture on Trauma Systems in India. He is the Founder and Coordinator of EMTC – Early management of Trauma Course, the First Trauma Course in India started in 1997 in Christian medical college, vellore. The programme is based on the principles of EMST of Australia – fully indigenised for Indian resources and requirement.[21][30] He started the First Formal training program in Emergency Medicine in India. 1-year Fellowship in Emergency Medicine, at CMC Vellore.[35] In 1998 he created the Society of Emergency Medicine, India and became a member and the founder.He was the National Faculty for the First Indian Conference of Emergency Medicine. He was nominated as Chairman – Academic Council, Society of Emergency Medicine, India in 2001 and was responsible for the organisation and coordination of Faculty for the National Conference for 3 consecutive years. He has played a major role in the development of Rural Emergency Medicine in Secondary Care Hospitals. He established the concept and instituted training programs for doctors and nurses in rural North-East India – Guwahati and Shillong. He was the Chief Resource person – National Conference of Medico-legal aspects in Emergency Medicine – Compiled the Recommendation document to the Government of India.In 2003 he obtained WHO recognition as National Training Centre for Emergency Nursing. He organised Injury Prevention and First Aid Awareness Camps – Once a month activity in Schools and for high –risk groups in Vellore District. In 2004 he led the first On-site Emergency Medical Response from CMC Vellore – Tsunami Disaster, South India. Coordinated the subsequent intermediate response teams.[32] He was the Organising Secretary – National Conference of Emergency Medicine – EMCON 2005. Unprecedented turn-out of 640 delegates, 29 International Faculty and 30 National Faculty.[36] [37] He obtained WHO recognition as South Asian Regional Training Centre for Emergency Medicine. Chief Training Instructor for the first batch of candidates from the Maldives.He started a website in 2006 and is the Founder and associate Webmaster – Network of Emergency Physicians India .[38] He is a Faculty member – National Institute of Disaster Medicine, New Delhi.[16] In 2007 he developed a course for NSET/USAID initiative – Hospital Preparedness for Emergencies (HOPE).[22] He is the Task Force Member –Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Involved in the 12 th National 5-year plan for the introduction of Emergency Medical systems in India. He is a Member of the Specialty Advisory Committee – National Board of Examinations Dr Suresh David is part of the EMS Board of Advisors[39] Dr Suresh David is a panelist and faculty member in the CONCLAVE ON “Legal and Ethical Challenges in Healthcare Ecosystem” conducted at Manekshaw Convention Centre, New Delhi Date: May 18– 20, 2017 for "Legal, Ethical and Administrative Challenges in Emergency Care and Road Safety".[40][41][42]
