Pedro Angulo Novoa (1803 – 26 May 1859), was a Chilean frigate captain who served in the Chilean Navy. His first years were dedicated to his family's shipping activity, thus learning the trade of navigation. In 1820, during the Spanish American wars of independence, he joined the Liberating Expedition of Peru, and in 1824 he was taken prisoner by the royalists, but the following year; off the distant coast of Guam, he managed to escape to Chile after his daring capture of the Spanish brigantine Aquiles. Later he entered the navy, serving since then in various positions and participating in some military conflagrations in which his country was involved. In the last years of his life, he dedicated himself again to the shipping activity.
Family origin
editThe origin of his family in Chile dates back to the arrival of a Basque couple in the 1760s.[1] They are Andrés de Angulo[Note 1] and María de la Parra, his grandparents on the paternal side, who settled in Concepción. His grandfather, from a noble family, was a native of Burgos, from the town of Santa Cecilia, in Spain, who had immigrated to serve in the Royal Army of Chile in the area known as "La Frontera"; reaching the rank of captain in 1790. This was a case of selected people arriving from Spain, in the three centuries of the colonial regime in Chile.[1]

edit- ^ Andrés de Angulo was a direct descendant of Pedro de Angulo, knight of the Order of Santiago and a great favourite of the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, who was captain general of the armies of Ferdinand II of Aragon in 1492 for the Conquest of Granada.[1]
