Air Force Chief BS Dhanoa has termed it as a better aircraft deal amid questions being raised by the opposition on the Rafale deal. Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa said that the government has taken a big decision by purchasing 36 Rafale fighter aircraft.
He said that high quality and high technology aircraft are being given to the Air Force against the enemy. Dhanoa further said that we had taken this decision after the deadlock. We had three options. Before we would wait any longer, return the Rafale fighter aircraft or make an emergency purchase. And we did an emergency purchase. Both the Rafale and the S-400[1] are a better deal to add to the Air Force's firepower.
There would have been delay when taking other aircraft
The IAF chief said that there has been a lot of delay in delivery already in the agreement with HAL. Delivery of Sukhoi-30[2] is three years delay, Jaguar delivery delayed 6 years, Light Combat Aircraft delivery delayed by 5 years and Mirage 2000 upgrade delayed by 2 years. Addressing reporters in New Delhi, he said that it is a matter of concern that the squadrons are weakening.

The deal is a "good package and the aircraft will prove to be important" for the subcontinent. He told reporters that Dassault Aviation chose an offset partner and the government and the Indian Air Force had no role in it. "Rafale is a good fighter aircraft," he told the press conference. The Opposition, led by the Congress, is accusing the government of benefiting Anil Ambani's Reliance Defense Limited in the Rafale deal[3]. The BJP has called all these allegations false. An interesting twist in the Rafale controversy came last month when former French President François Hollande was quoted as saying that France was not given an option to choose an Indian partner for Dassault. The Indian government had proposed Reliance's name as an offset partner for the French aerospace company.
