The Futamata Tunnel Explosion (Japanese: 二又トンネル爆発事故 futamata ton'neru bakuhatsu jiko) was an explosion on 12 November 1945, following the detonation of Imperial Japanese Army gunpowder, hidden within a railroad tunnel near Soeda, Fukuoka, by U.S. forces. The entire tunnel was destroyed, along with many nearby houses. 149 people were injured and 135 houses damaged.
Incident
editApproximately one hour after the allied forces retreated from the tunnel, at 16:30, flames were bursting from the mouth of the tunnel, reaching a river more than a hundred metres away and the houses across from it. The flames spread from house to house while residents tried to put it out.
At 17:20, falling sediment from the collapsed tunnel finally extinguished the fire.
