Perdeby (newspaper)
editPerdeby is the official student newspaper of the University of Pretoria. It is the largest student publication in South Africa. Perdeby has been operational since 1939. A new issue of Perdeby is available free of charge every Monday throughout each semester. The title of the publication, which is borrowed from the Afrikaans language, means "wasp".
History
editThe first issue of Perdeby was published in 1939, by a group of five anonymous students who had given themselves the title of “Vyf Liberaliste” (Afrikaans for "five liberals"). The publication was formed so as to effect better communication within the rapidly growing University. These five students were the ones who started the next venture of student newspapers after numerous failed publications like The T.U.C Students Magazine/Studentblad van die T.U.K (1912), Vocator (1927), The Students Forum (1930) and others.
The first ever copy of "Die Perdeby" was created in the Theology building using a borrowed typewriter. The success and popularity of Die Perdeby among the students prompted the Student Council to have a meeting in which it was decided that Die Perdeby was to be the University’s official monthly student newspaper.
Perdeby’s first Editor was George du Plessis . The next edition came out on the 1st of June that year, followed by a third edition on the 1st of September. In 1940 Perdeby had officially become a monthly periodical. In 1944 the title of the newspaper changed to Die Nuwe Perdeby, it was subsequently changed to a weekly periodical in 1948.
Subject Matter and Policy
editPerdeby consists of four content sections and five support sections.These include: news, sport, features, layout, web, multimedia, copy and entertainment. The newspaper reports on a broad range of topics including local campus and residence news as well as national and international news and sport topics. The entertainment section provides reviews and commentary on literature,film, music and gaming. There is also a focus on special events,culture and drama. Perdeby includes in-depth feature pieces,an editorial piece, a "Fun and Games" section and lastly a general opinions and letters segment. The newspaper remains politically neutral.
Circulation
editCopies of Perdeby are printed and distributed to all university campuses. This includes the Hatfield campus, Medical campus, Groenkloof Campus, Onderstrpoort, Mamelodi Campus as well as all of the University residences.
