Ekulo Senior Secondary School

Ekulo Senior Secondary School is a boarding school for learners grades 8-12. [1]The school principal of Ekulo S.S.S is Mr Mwetuhanga Hishekwa. Ekulo is one of the schools in Nambia.[2] that has the best performance. It is situated in Omuthiya, a location that is located in Oshikoto Region, in Ovambo Land. The school opened in 1997 and has around 450 learners from grades 8-12, whereby most of the learners are Oshiwambo speakers. The school has an administrative building, a large number of classrooms that are arranged into rows, flush toilets, a dining commons with a TV, boys and girls hostels, and teachers houses. Each building has one classroom wide and 4-5 classrooms long. [3] Ekulo is only about 15 km North East of Etosha National Park.

On the 14th June 2007, the school lost three of its teachers. The teachers were in the small Opel Corsa bakkie, that collided head to head with the truck on the main road between Ondangwa and Oshakati on Thursday evening, when they were on their way to organise a school bussar. Two female teachers and a two-month-old baby survived the horrific accident with serious injuries and were immediately rushed to the hospital, while the other three teachers and a domestic worker died at the spot. [4]

The Director of Education in the Oshikoto Region, Lamek Kafidi, called a meeting, were more than 300 teachers convened at Ekulo Senior Secondary School (SSS) near Omuthiya in the Oshikoto Region for the Omuthiya Circuit’s annual teachers’ conference last week. The Director addressed the one-day conference, he called on both teachers and learners to maintain discipline at all times if the country’s education system is to improve. While a lack of discipline amongst learners is a reality, Kafidi noted, many teachers also make themselves guilty of indiscipline. [5]
