History

edit

Jay Gould and his brother, Hal transplanted New York Fries from Manhattan to Canada in the early 1980s. Gould spent a year developing the concept of South St. Burger co. before opening the first store in 2005 after the success of New York Fries. [3]

South St. Burger Co.

edit

Jay Gould opened ‘’South St. Burger Co.’’ following the success of New York Fries. Gould sold New York Fries to Cara Operations in 2015, but South St. Burger Co. was not part of this initial acquisition. South St. Burger Co. serves premium fast-food in a contemporary, New York-style loft-like environment. [4] The menu features fresh, 1/3 lb. patties, made with 100% pure beef, chicken breasts and veggie burgers as well as a small burgers. Sides include the famous hand-cut ‘’New York Fries’’ French fries and Poutine, hand-made Onion Rings and hand-scooped milkshakes made from real, premium ice cream [5]

Recipes Unlimited

edit

RECIPE Unlimited Corporation is Canada's oldest and largest full-service restaurant company. Founded in 1883 as The Canada Railway News Company and later renamed CARA Operations

Cara Operation

edit

With over 50+ years of franchising expertise in developing Canadian restaurants, ‘’RECIPE’’ has the knowledge, skills and desires to help build businesses.

‘’CARA Operations’’ supports 19 restaurant brands across Canada that serve a variety of menus and dining styles. ‘’CARA’’ franchise’ several of the most iconic restaurant brands with almost 1400 restaurants within Canada and 61 international locations. The acquisition of New York Fries in 2015 was lucrative for Cara Operations because it allowed them to expand their presence into malls where their other brands had limited presence. [6] Jay Gould commented on the acquisition of New York Fries:

“Cara is one of the most respected names in the Canadian Foodservice industry and I am excited to have them take over New York Fries and continue to grow it. For my part, I will continue to build South St. Burger using the same principles that have worked so well all these years for New York Fries". [7]

Franchising

edit

The total investment put into these franchises is CAD$230,000 - $350,000, while the cash required goes from CAD$100,00 - $140,00. The net-worth goes from CAD$300,000 - $500,000 and will take approximately 2 months to build. [8]

According to Canadian Business, the head of New York Fries and South Street Burgers, Gould did not franchise the store until he had built 14 of them. Jay Gould wanted to be able to figure his way around franchises without other franchisees telling him how he should be running his businesses. [9]
