DAN Department of Management and Organizational Studies (Western University)

edit

The DAN Department of Management and Organizational Studies, commonly known as DAN Management or Management and Organizational Studies (MOS), is an undergraduate program at Western University, located in London, Ontario, Canada. The program is named in honour of Aubrey Dan, its principle benefactor.[1]

Housed within the faculty of social science, DAN Management offers five major areas of business study: accounting, finance, consumer behaviour, human resource management, and commercial aviation management (CAM). Students that graduate from the program receive a Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies (BMOS) degree.[2]

DAN Management emphasizes on the combination of social science and evidence-based foundations of management education.[3] This program has adapted and implemented an Evidence-Based Management (EBM) approach to its curriculum, making it the first and only explicit adaption of EBM for business education in Canada.[4]

History

edit

Degree Change

edit

Western University has been offering courses in business and management as early as 1980, under the MOS program. Students who completed the program would receive the Bachelor of Administration and Commercial Studies (BACS) degree, which is now renamed and is equivalent to the BMOS degree.[5] Since the name change of the degree, the program’s curriculum has developed to offer a wider range of business specializations.

The BACS degree included the following four areas of concentration:

  • commercial aviation management,
  • finance and administration,
  • finance administration and computer science, and
  • organizational and human resources.[6]

Official Renaming of DAN Management

edit

In 2006, the MOS program was renamed the Aubrey Dan Program in MOS, in recognition of Aubrey Dan’s landmark donation of $5 million.[7] Dan, BACS’85, is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, Tony Award-winning producer, and President of the Dancap Group of Companies.[8] The purpose of the donation was to support faculty and students through professorships, faculty fellowships, research funds, and student awards. It is said to “reflect the connection he [Dan] feels with the department and the faculty of Social Science.”[9]

In 2013, the MOS program was named a department within the faculty of social science, meaning that the department of MOS contained the Aubrey Dan Program. This Senate-approved name change clarified that the department and program are “essentially the same.”[8]

On June 22nd 2017, the Department of MOS was officially renamed as the DAN Department of Management and Organizational Studies. The DAN Management program is Western University’s first donor-named department.[10]

Undergraduate

edit

In the 2016-2017 academic year, 6500 students are currently enrolled within the school’s faculty of social science.[11] Approximately 2800 of the 6500 students within the faculty are enrolled in the DAN Management program, making it the largest department in social science.[12]

Students are able to pursue three four-year degree options: honours specialization, honours double-major, or specialization. In combination with one of the degree options, students specialize in one of the five academic streams the program offers.[13]

Admission Requirements from High School

edit

As of 2015, the mid-year average guideline admission average for Ontario high school students to be accepted into the DAN Management program was mid to high 80’s.[14] High school students applying to DAN Management require six grade 12U or M-level courses (or equivalent) including: Grade 12U English (ENG4U), and two of: Grade 12U Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), or Math of Data Management (MDM4U).[15]

In the 2016-2017 academic year, 861 students were enrolled into the DAN Management program from high school.[12]

Areas of Study

edit

Accounting

The accounting stream provides all academic requirements, which are fully accredited, for the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.[16]

Finance

The finance stream allows students to develop the qualitative and quantitative skills to understand how financial decisions are made in private and public sector organizations. Courses focus on the workings of the economy, financial markets, and how to use financial tools.[17]

Consumer Behaviour

The consumer behaviour stream focuses on the factors of when, where, and why consumers buy products. DAN Management offers courses that examine the role of variables such as personality, demographics, and attitudes, which ultimately form a basis for marketing strategies.[17]

Human Resources

The human sources stream provides all academic requirements, fully accredited, for the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation.[18] Courses revolve around recruitment, selection, training, development, health and safety, and compensation.[17]

Commercial Aviation Management (CAM)

The CAM stream was established in 1999 and allows students to pursue courses in human factors in aviation, aviation law, airport planning, and airport management. CAM currently offers a flight and non-flight option. Presently, the CAM specialization at Western University is the only university in Canada to offer a four-year degree in Aviation Management.[19] With the flight option, students are able to earn a Transport Canada approved Integrated Commercial Pilot’s License while attaining a BMOS degree.[20] These credentials allow one to act as a professional pilot, while being able to assume management responsibilities.

Graduate

edit

Graduate Diploma in Accounting

edit

Offered by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (through Ivey Business School) and the DAN Department, this program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for entrance into CPA Canada’s Professional Education Program (PEP) at an advanced level (Capstone 1).[21]

In April 2015, the new Graduate Diploma in Accounting received the CPA’s accreditation.[22] In 2016, 39 students partook in the 13-week program and were able to enter directly into the Capstone 1 Level in the CPA’s PEP.[23]

Locations

edit

DAN Management is currently offered on four of Western University’s campuses, all of which are located in London, Ontario:

Research

edit

Consumer and Organizational Behaviour

edit

Researchers in the DAN Management faculty are currently focusing on the study of human behaviour in consumption and organizational contexts, with “a focus on being, doing, and influencing.” Faculty research expertise in this domain include examining globalization, culture, consumption, social influence, and sustainability.[27]

Corporate Governance

edit

DAN Management researchers in the Corporate Governance group study the systems, processes, structures, and frameworks used to control and direct any corporation. Faculty study the legal, regulatory, and ethical environment that sets the stage for any type of governance. Researchers have training in economics, finance, human resource management, industrial relations, psychology, and statistics, and their research interests are deeply rooted in social science.[28]

Internship Program

edit

The DAN Management Industry Internship Program (IIP) was established in 2003.[29] The IIP provides professional opportunities for students interested in gaining practical experience in the business world. In the IIP, students spend anywhere from 8-16 months working in a degree-related position between their third and fourth year.[30]

Some companies that students have been hired at through the IIP include the following: 3M, Blackberry, BROSE, CAA, Canada Revenue Agency, Celestica, CIBC, Formet Industries, General Motors (Cami), Honda, Hydro One, IBM, Labatt's, McCormick, Munich Re, OES, Sanofi, Siemens Canada, Toronto Hydro, Transformed Shared Service Organization, and Western.[29]

Exchange Program

edit

Students may go on exchange or study abroad. In particular for DAN Management students, the department has partnered with four schools:

Dan Management Students’ Association (DMSA)

edit

DMSA is an association at Western University, comprised of students in the DAN Management program. The DMSA acts as an official liaison between the DAN Management program and its students.[34] The association aims for members to benefit from networking opportunities and academic resources.[35]

In 2013-2014, DMSA received the First Year Involvement Award by the University Students’ Council. Recipients of this award are for a club that has specific activities and initiatives that improve the overall university experience of first-year students.[36]

DMSA Connect

edit

DMSA Connect is an annual event organized by DMSA to bring together DAN Management alumni and current students to discuss career paths.[37] The event consists of two segments. The first segment consists of a “speed-dating” rotation where students are introduced to five different graduates from their stream of choice. The second segment is an open-floor networking hour for students to approach alumni more formally.[38]

Notable Alumni

edit
  • Galen Weston - Executive Chairman of George Weston Limited
