Keigwin and Company is a contemporary dance company based in New York City. Utilizing a collaborative process, the Company combines physicality with theatricality, samples a variety of mediums and, ultimately, fuses art with entertainment to reach a cross-pollinated audience.
Company
editKeigwin and Company was established in 2003 and continues to share its brand of contemporary dance with audiences across the country. It has performed throughout New York City in such venues as The Joyce Theater, Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at NYU, New York City Center, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, The Duke Theater on 42nd Street, Symphony Space and NYU/Tisch School of the Arts. Nationally, Keigwin and Company has been presented by the American Dance Festival, the Bates Dance Festival, Summerdance Santa Barbara, Jacob's Pillow, and many more. It has received grants and support from The Greenwall Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, The Christian Keesee Charitable Trust, Dianne & Daniel Vapnek Family Fund, Ella Foshay, and Royce Family Funds. Tour Support has been provided by Expeditions, a program of the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), and the National Performance Network (NPN).
Keigwin and Company will return to the Joyce Theater in June of 2009, and will participate in Works & Process at the Guggenheim in September, presenting the world premiere of a new dance, set to a commissioned score by composer Steve Reich. In October 2009, the Company will perform for the first time at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Artists
editLARRY KEIGWIN (Artistic Director) is a native New Yorker and graduate of Hofstra University, where he received a BA in dance. He founded Keigwin and Company in 2003, and as Artistic Director, Larry has created twelve dances and led the company as it has performed at theaters and dance festivals throughout New York City and across the country, including The Joyce Theater, Works & Process at the Guggenheim, New York City Center, American Dance Festival, the Vail International Dance Festival, and more. In addition to his work for Keigwin and Company, Larry has created Keigwin Kabaret, a fusion of modern dance, vaudeville, and burlesque acts presented by the Public Theater at Joe's Pub and by Symphony Space.
Recent commissions have included the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, The Juilliard School, The New York City Ballet's Choreographic Institute, The Martha Graham Dance Company, The NYU/Tisch School's Second Avenue Dance Company, Paradigm, Hofstra University, and California Institute of the Arts. Larry's other choreographic credits include work with the pop band Fischerspooner, comedian Murray Hill, and as an Associate Choreographer for both The Radio City Rockettes and the Off-Broadway musical "The Wild Party." As a dancer, Larry has danced at the Metropolitan Opera in Doug Varone's "Le Sacre Du Printemps" and Julie Taymor's "The Magic Flute," in addition to his work with Mark Dendy (receiving a Bessie Award in 1998 for his performance in "Dream Analysis"), Robin Becker, Jane Comfort, John Jasperse, Doug Elkins, Zvi Gotheiner, and David Rousseve. He appeared in the Broadway show "Dance of the Vampires" and the Julie Taymor, Oscar nominated film "Across the Universe."
NICOLE WOLCOTT (Associate Artistic Director) co-founded Keigwin and Company with Larry Keigwin in 2003. She has been performing with dance companies, rock bands, and video artists around the country for sixteen years and is now a choreographer, teacher and performance artist based in New York City. Wolcott's choreography has been performed in New York City at Symphony Space, the Frying Pan, Galapagos, Dance Theater Workshop, Joyce SoHo, Joe's Pub at the Public Theater, CBGB's, Monkeytown, PS122, and around the country at Summerdance Santa Barbara, Bates Dance Festival, Florida Dance Festival and the American Dance Festival. She is presently an adjunct professor at Hunter College and continues to teach in private studios in New York City, as well as traveling the country as a guest artist.
Keigwin and Company members include Matthew Baker, Julian Barnett, Ashley Browne, Alexander Gish, Liz Riga, Ryoji Sasamoto, and Ying-Ying Shiau.
