Boundary, Boundaries - Used to describe the borders of the URA Master Plan, HDB Towns and Estates or local administrative subdivisions. The terms "boundary" and "boundaries" are preferably used over "border" or "borders" to keep this in accordance to the terms used by the Singapore Government. "Bounded" is preferably used over "Bordered" in the same case.
Planning Area - Used to describe the delineated planning areas by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. Novena for instance, is a planning area. When using it as the first phrase of a sentence, the "A" in "Area" is preferably capitalized.
Subzone - Subdivision of planning areas, often highlighting a certain neighbourhood or historical subdistrict. For instance, Chinatown.
Zone - Used to describe a group of subzones commonly associated with each other administratively or historically. The term was first used by the URA in 1995 to describe the collection of subzones that formed the Central Business District.[1]
Conservation Area - Special areas of historical significance, designated by the URA for conservation purposes. The boundaries of these areas are usually located within the jurisdiction of one or more planning areas. A subzone of the same name as the conservation area may not be entirely conterminous with the latter, but usually share the same heritage as its counterpart. An example of this is Joo Chiat.
HDB Town, New Town - Used interchangeably to describe Housing and Development Board towns that are usually located within the boundaries of a planning area, or in rarer cases, two or more planning areas (as demonstrated with Kallang/Whampoa). The former is the newer term used by the HDB while the latter is a historical term that is still occasionally used today to describe such towns.
HDB Estate - Not to be confused with neighbourhoods or precincts, which are usually located within the jurisdiction of a HDB town. Marine Parade is a good example of this.
