Franz Laurentius Mauermann
editFranz was born in Neuzelle, and later became a German Roman Catholic Bishop in Dresden, from 1841 until his death. He was one of few Apostolic Vicar in the Saxon Hereditary Lands. Franz was the older brother of Ignaz Bernhard Mauermann. He succeeded Ignaz as Bishop after his death. He used his time to speak parity between Protestant’s and Catholics, after the divide.
Early Life
editMauermann attended the Latin school at the Neuzelle monastery and entered the Cistercian order there at the age of 16 . He was ordained a priest in 1804 and then worked as a chaplain in the pastoral care of his hometown for nine years. In 1813 he went to the Cistercian monastery Marienstern as a house chaplain , which was under the spiritual supervision of Neuzelle. He remained there until his monastery was dissolved by the Prussian government in 1817. Now a secular priest, Mauermann placed himself in the service of the Apostolic Vicariate in the Saxon Hereditary Lands (responsible for Saxony, but excluding Upper Lusatia, Saxony-Altenburg and Reuss older and younger line). First he was a chaplain, later a pastor in Leipzig. Appointed court chaplain, Mauermann also received a canonry at the Bautzen Petridom and in 1827 took over the chairmanship of the newly formed Catholic consistory in Dresden.
After the death of his younger brother Ignaz Bernhard Mauermann, Franz was appointed by Pope Gregory XVI in 1841 at the request of King Friedrich August II. Appointed as the new Vicar Apostolic of Saxony and elevated to Titular Bishop of Rama . He received his episcopal ordination in March 1842 in the Dresden Court Church by the Litoměřice Bishop Augustin Hille . During his short term in office, Mauermann had the Catholic church built in Annaberg . His brother had left the necessary funds to the church. He also opened a Catholic school in Grimma and initiated the construction of the Trinity Church in Leipzig, although he did not live to see its completion. In his will he donated an amount for the construction of a Catholic church and school in Saxony (the so-called Mauermann Foundation). In 1883 they built the church and school in Radeberg.
Death
editMauermann died on October 25,1845 and was buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery in Dresden-Friedrichstadt, next to the chapel there that he had built himself in 1842. His successor was Joseph Dittrich.
The bishop was considered a good preacher. He had some of his sermons published in print. He also wrote treatises on canon law and a history of the Neuzelle monastery.
