After leaving school, Horton studied architecture and exhibited a design for a theatre façade at the Royal Academy in 1890.[3] Over time, Horton became disillusioned with architecture, and sent a short story to Thomas Hardy, seeking advise on becoming a writer. Hardy had himself previously studied architecture, but discouraged Horton from leaving the profession, advising he use his literary skills to write for architectural magazines.[1]
