Shitsuji-sama no okiniiri (The Fave of Mr. Butler) is a shoujo manga illustrated by Rei Izawa and written by Fuyu Tsuyama. It tells about a girl named Ryou Himura who moves to Souseikan Gakuen, a school which has 2 classes, L Class and B Class[1]. There, she meets Hakuou Kanzawa who swore to become her 'exclusive butler, and starts her determination to rebuild her family's pride.

It's currently serialised in Bessatsu Hana to Yume. The manga has been compiled into 10 volumes and 4 drama CDs.

Plot

Ryou Himura has just lost her parents in an accident. Than, she lives with her grandparents who are from distinguished yet declining family. In order to rebuild her family, she moved to Souseikan Gakuen. The school has 2 classes, L Class and B Class. L Class stands for Lord/Lady classes, its students are heir and heiress of rich families. While B Class stands for Butler class[2]. Differs from L Class' students who enrols using money, B Class' students enrols using merit principal and has only one class for each school year.[3] While she gets lost in her first day, she meets a B Class' top student who is sleeping under a tree. The student, whose name is Hakuou Kanzawa, later swears under Souseikan's name to become Ryou's exclusive butler, despite the fact that he is actually the heir of Kanzawa Group.

Ryou Himura (氷村良, Himura Ryou) Voiced by: Fumiko Orikasa

A cheerful girl who has just lost her parents due to an accident. She likes eating and cooking sweets.[4] During her first meeting with Hakuou, she has impressed Hakuou with her unsual behaviour for L Class' student, saying that her family's pride is the family always have breakfast together.[5] Her mother was a heiress and her father was a butler. The fact that her parents eloped are exposed by Hakuou fan,Kouryouin Shizuka.[6] Ryou than is challenged to get a butler within 1 week. She tries to pursue B Class' students with her sweets, but fails. On the day, Hakuou appears and swears to her to become her exclusive butler. At first, it is difficult for her to have an exclusive butler who always accompanies her whenever she goes, but soon she gets used to it without losing her independence. Ryou is very clumsy and can get lost easily, things that make Hakuou very worried and protective upon her.[7]

Kaoruko Asamiya (朝宮薫子, Asamiya Kaoruko) Voiced by: Narumi Konno

Ryou's best friend. She is a daughter of art dealer,[8] the reason why she has wide knowledge about art. Kaoruko manages KuroTsubame Pictorial, a magazine which butlers from B Class.[9] She is Shitsuji-Mania, often makes pictures of Hakuou and others. She is in Cooking club.

Makoto Kusunoki (楠 真琴, Kusunoki Makoto)

A new transferred student in Ryou and Kaoruko's class.[10] Her family and Hakuou's are close. During the first days of hers, Hakuou is assigned by the board chairman to become her exclusive butler for some days. Her butler is Sendou's older brother. Her transfer is a plan to make Hakuou and her become close and engaged both families. She obediently follows the plan in order to fulfill her family expectation. She asks Ryou about Hakuou's meaning to her, making her feels anxious and finally realises that she loves Hakuou. After some talk with Ryou, Makoto refuses to continue the plan and apologises to everyone.

B Class

Hakuou Kanzawa (神澤 伯王, Kanzawa Hakuou) Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai

A top student of B Class who is called "Hakuou-sama". He doesn't like to be judge based on his name and appearance. Hakuou likes sweets, but hates vegetables.[11] He swears, it doesn't matter when and where Ryou is, or what he wears and he be, as long as there is Ryou, he will be her butler.[12][13] He enrols to B Class in order to test his own strength.[14]

Iori Douke (道家 庵, Douke Iori) Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya

One of Hakuou's servants and chilhood friends, along with Hayato. He is a third year student, one year older than Hakuou and others. Iori is the one who cooks Hakuou's bento and is very detailed to everything. He always bring a pocket watch which was a symbol of the three promise and takes great care of it. [15] Iori is idolised by L Class' female students and called "Hohoemi no Oujisama" (Smiling Prince).[16]

Hayato Kanuka (鹿糠 隼斗, Kanuka Hayato) Voiced by: Daisuke Ono

Another Hakuou's servant and chilhood friend. He is also a third year student. Hayato is skilled in martial arts. Hayato calls Ryou by "Himura-jou" (Lady Himura). He often speaks frankly, making Hakuou and Iori hit him. He also often get bullied by Iori. Hayato is idolised by L Class' female students as "Akogare no Oniisama" (Aspiring Brother).[17]

Masaki Sendou (仙堂 征貴, Sendou Masaki) Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa

Hakuou's rival who holds the position of Committee's president. He follows a strict rule of butler's way of behaving. Because of a misunderstanding, he punishes Hakuou to stop being Ryou's butler, and Masaki becomes the replacement. He is known as "Cyborg Butler".[18] He likes and gets along with cats because he has one at his house (as a preparation if his master has pet).[19]

Kanzawa Family

Aoi Kanzawa (神澤 碧織衣, Kanzawa Aoi)

The first daughter of Kanzawa family, Hakuou and Rio's older sister. She appears during summer holidays, kidnapping Ryou.[20] Then she sends letter to Hakuou who has summer class, making him rushes to Kanzawa's villa. She often teases Hakuou about Ryou's matter.

Rio Kanzawa (神澤 理皇, Kanzawa Rio) Voiced by: Mitsuki Saiga

Aoi and Hakuou's younger brother.[21] He admires Hakuou, he even sneaks out to meet his brother on his birthday.

Kiryuu (桐生, Kiryuu) Voiced by: Tomoaki Maeno

Rio's caretaker who often gets bullied by him.

Harumi Sakisaka (向坂 遥巳, Sakisaka Harumi) Voiced by: Kouji Yusa

Souseikan B Class' graduate. He comes to Souseikan as a lecturer for B Class and ends up challenging Hakuou to make tea with Ryou as the juror. Once he meets Hakuou in a party, and advices him to enrol to B Class. Currently, Harumi works as a butler of English household.[22]

Albert Startwing (アルベート・スタルトウィン, Arubeeto Sutarutouin) Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana

Harumi's current master. He comes from United Kingdom to Japan in order to learn language. Because of his closeness to Ryou, Albert gives Hakuou some hard time, struggling his desire to accompany Ryou to his position as a mere butler.[23] Thanks to Harumi's interference, he finally understands that he can't meddle between Ryou and Hakuou. Then he returns to his home country, with Ryou and others send him at airport.

Shitsuji-sama no Okiniiri is currently serialised in Bessatsu Hana to Yume, published by Hakusensha. The manga is still ongoing and has been compiled to 10 bound volumes. It also has been published in Taiwan by Tong Li Publishing.

The ninth volume of Shitsuji-sama no Okiniiri was ranked 10th on Oricon charts[24], and the tenth was ranked 19th. [25]
