• one indent = townland (or multiple townlands)
  • two indents = island not a townland in its own right. A few are definitely included in area of an adjacent townland, whether an island or mainland townland. To see which are not included in any trownland one might checn the 1840s PLU listings or perhaps just the townland indexes.

Parl Gaz v2 p188 "The islands are popularly fabled to be as numerous as the days of the year; but they have been more soberly estimated at 90 in the Upper Lake and 109 in the Lower"

Inflow of Lough edit

By analogy with outflow, the point where townland boundary goes from midstream to shoreline marks the transition from river / small lake to big lake; however, in this case that is dowstream on the River Finn at Edergoole tld, whose area includes no water. Thus the following might be at the same height as the Upper Lough so called:

  • Lough Sarah
  • Little Lough
  • Killylea Lough
  • Derrykerrib Lough

The inflow of the River Erne goes to the banks at Bunanumery and Foalies, but is still labelled "River Erne" at next tld [Derryvony]

No islands in this section in any case.

Outflow of Upper Lough edit

the point where, in the view of the OS, Upper Lough Erne ends and becomes [the three, then two, channels of] the River Erne is evident where the townland boundaries switch from hugging the shoreline to extending into midstream. this occurs partway round Belleisle and the bigger island to its west [even though "Tamlaght Bay" is downstream and the name suggests part of a lake] ---

    • Bellisle Demesne
