The East Fractions and West Fractions were exclaves of the barony of Magunihy in County Kerry.[1] They existed from the suppression of County Desmond in the sixteenth century until the 1840s, when detached parts were transferred by Richard Griffith under the Valuation of Lands (Ireland) Act 1836 to the adjoining baronies.[2][3] The fractions were part of the MacCarthy Mór territory from which Magunihy was delimited.[2]

East Fractions edit

The East Fractions comprised several townlands in Sliabh Luachra forming parts of three civil parishes.[4] Statutory Rules confirms these: p.23 1842-07-15 [coKerry/barMagunihy>barDuhallow] par Kilmeen/ tlds Derryleagh, Doonasleen N, ~ S, ~ E, Islandbrack, Loumanagh N, ~ S, Urraghilmore E, ~ W p.23 1842-07-15 [coKerry/barMagunihy>barWestMuskerry] par Drishane/tlds Ballydaly, Kippagh

It seems they were collectively treated for some civil purposes as equivalent to a single Kerry parish.[5][6][4] Need info on whether this was just a convenience of geographers or also used in administration.

  • One fraction comprised townlands in the parish of Drishane. The Irish Manuscripts Commission, quoting the 1841 census, names these as Ballydaly and Kippagh;[7] whereas Butler gives them as Ballydaly and Coolanarney;[3] Sean Tucker lists three townlands, Ballydaly, Kippagh and Comachoe.[8] While Butler described this fraction as "nearly detached",[3] the Ordnance Survey map shows that in fact the three townlands are separated from the main body of Magunihy and Kerry by the townland of Coomacheo.[9] The townlands formed a salient of Magunihy stretching north to the barony of Duhallow, almost cutting off a portion of Muskerry West. Two townlands (1841 population 380[10]) were transferred to Muskerry West by Griffith, thereby linking the western exclave of that barony with the main body to the east.
  • Another fraction was enclaved within Duhallow and transferred to that barony. It comprised ten townlands in Kilmeen parish, an area (1841 population 1,355[10]) around the road between Boherboy and Knocknagree, comprising the townlands of Islandav (or Devilish), Loumanagh (North and South), Doonasleen (North, South, and East), Islandbrack, and ​Urraghilmore (East and West)
  • The third fraction was the Kerry portion of Nohovaldaly parish (not to be confused with Nohoval in south Cork). This parish around Ballydesmond (or Kingwilliamstown) is split by the border; the Kerry portion is not detached from the other parishes of Magunihy and was not affected by the 1836 Act.

Ballydaly and Nohovaldaly are called after the Daly (Ó Dálaigh) family of poets.[11]

West Fractions edit

The West Fractions were locally situated within the Kerry barony of Iveragh and transferred to it by Griffith.[3] They were territories of Sliocht Cormaic of Dunguile and Sliocht Clan Donell Finn.[2] They were in the civil parishes of Killorglin, Kilcolman, and Glanbehy, (confirm in [4]) around Caragh Lake and the Caragh River.[2]

The first and second detached portions listed are (two of the three) East Fractions; the seventh is the West Fractions. The two East Fractions are also in another order, of the same date, for Co. Cork [the whole order is on pp.22-28 of the 1904 edition; the relevant section is on p.23].

Whereas * * * [Here follows the first recital to the Proclamation of February 18, 1840, as to county of Armagh, printed at page 2, above];

And whereas * * * [Here follows a recital of that portion of Griffith's Report on which the Order is based]:

Now We, the Lord Lieutenant and Privy Council of Ireland, having taken into consideration the premises, and likewise the several matters set forth in the said report of the said Richard Griffith, in pursuance of the powers vested in Us, under the provisions of said herein-before recited Act of the sixth and seventh years of the reign of His said late Majesty King William the Fourth, do hereby order and direct, that the said detached portion herein-before first mentioned, to wit, the said detached portion of the barony of Magunnahy, in said county of Kerry, and which is insulated in the barony of Duhallow, and county of Cork, and which comprises the townlands of Doonasteen North, Doonasteen South, Doonasteen East, Derryleeagh, Islandbrach, Loughmanagh North, Loughmanagh South, ITrroghilmore West, and Urroghilmore East, all belonging to the parish of Kilmeen, shall be, and the same are hereby annexed to and incorporated with the said barony of Duhallow, in the said county of Cork:

And We do hereby, in further pursuance of the said lastmentioned Act, order and direct, that the said detached portion herein-before secondly mentioned, that is to say, the said detached portion of the barony of Magunnahy, which is situated between the baronies of Duhallow and West Muskerry, in the county of Cork, and which is for the greater part bounded by the barony of West Musketry, and which comprises the townlands of Ballydaly and Kippagh, belonging to the parish of Drishane, shall be, and the same is hereby annexed to and incorporated with the barony of West Muskerry, in the county of Cork:

And We do hereby, in further pursuance of the said lastmentioned Act, order and direct, that the two detached portions herein-before thirdly above-mentioned, that is to say, the said two detached portions of the barony of Clanmaurice, which are insulated in the barony of Trugnanacmy, and one of which comprises the townland of Lissadigue, belonging to the parish of Ballynahaglish, and the other portion comprises the townlands of Fennit Within and Fennit Without, belonging to the parish of Fennit, shall be and the same are hereby annexed to and incorporated with the said barony of Trughanacmy, in the county of Kerry:

And We do hereby, in further pursuance of the said lastmentioned Act, order and direct, that the said two detached portions herein-before fourthly mentioned, that is to say, the said two detached portions of the barony of Trughanacmy, which are insulated in the barony of Dunkerron, and one of which comprises the townland of Killoaghaun, belonging to the parish of Knockaun, and the other portion comprises the townland of Mealus, belonging to the parish of Knockaun, man be, and the same are hereby annexed to and incorporated with the said barony of Dunkerron:

And We do hereby, in further pursuance of the said lastmentioned Act, order and direct, that the said detached portion fifthly above-mentioned, that is to say, the said detached portion of the barony of Trughanacmy, which is situated between the baronies of Magunnahy and Dunkerron, but which for the greater part is bounded by the barony of Dunkerron, and which comprises the townland of Meanus, belonging to the parish of Killorglin, ami the townlands of Meanus and Tubrid, belonging to the parish of Knockaun, shall be, and the same is hereby annexed to and incorporated with the said barony of Dunkerron:

And We do hereby, in further pursuance of the said lastmentioned Act, order and direct, that the said detached portion sixthly above-mentioned, that is to say, the said detached portion of the barony of Dunkerron, which is situated between the barony of Iveragh, and a detached portion of the barony of Magunnahy, and which for the greater part is bounded by the barony of Iveragh, and which comprises the townlands of Ballynakilly Lower, Ballynakilly Upper, Coolroo Lower, Coolroo Upper, Cooniasaheeran, Curraheen, Dreenagh, Drouni, Goulawn, Keelnabrack Lower, Keelnabrack Upper, Neeshough, Beenellagaun, Toureeneealagh, and glebe of Ballynakilly Lower, all belonging to the parish of Glanbegh, shall be, and the same is hereby annexed to and incorporated with the said barony of Iveragh:

And We do hereby, in further pursuance of the said lastmentioned Act, order and direct, that the said detached portion seventhly above-mentioned, that is to say, the said detached portion of the barony of Magunnahy, which is situated between the barony of Iveragh, and the barony of Dunkerron. and which comprises the following townlands belonging to the parish of Killorglin, namely, Ballanclave, Clounagillough. Commons of Ballinclare, Commons of Dooaghs, Cooninafannada, Doolahig, Dooaghs, Illaun, Stocka, Knockannglass, Knockannrooa, Mwingafooka, Quaybaun, Skartnamakagh. Thooreenasliggaun, Threenooghter, and part of Caragh Lake: also the following townlands belonging to the parish of Glanbeagh, namely, Bunglosha East, Bunglosha West, Callnhanishka, Coomavoon, Corriginaan, Cosha North, Cosha South. Creeveen, Cummaan, Curraheen, Drumbrain, Droum, Gurtdurragh, Keel, Lickeen, Lauher, Toornancaska, Treengorriv, Treenmanagh, and part of Caragh Lake, shall be, and the same is hereby annexed to and incorporated with the said barony of Iveragh:

And We do hereby declare and direct, that the Order herein made respecting the said respective detached portions of the said county of Kerry, so hereby annexed to the said county of Cork, shall not take effect so far as relates to the elective franchise of any individual, or his right to vote at elections of members to serve in Parliament, at present enjoyed under any subsisting registry of such right, until the expiration of each such subsisting registry respectively; and that as regards the said detached portions of the said county of Kerry, and the said detached portions of the several baronies herein-before mentioned this Order shall not take effect so far as relates to the apportionment, applotment, or collection of grand jury cess, or the presentment of public money, or any grand jury presentment, or any matter or thing relating thereto, or the appointment of high constables or collectors of public money, until a valuation shall have been completed in and for the said county of Kerry, under and by virtue of the said recited Act of the sixth and seventh years of the reign of His said late Majesty; but that as to each and every new registration of the right of voting at elections for Members of Parliament for the said counties of Kerry and Cork respectively, and as to all causes and matters, civil and criminal, except those now pending in any of the Superior Courts, or Courts of Quarter Sessions, or Civil Bill Courts, and as to the jurisdiction, civil as well as criminal, of any justice of the peace, assistant barrister, or other person, in and for the said counties respectively, and as to all other intents and purposes whatsoever, not herein-before specially provided for, this Order shall commence and take effect from the date hereof.
