James Peter Madden (born 9th July 1997) is a British professional boxer. He turned professional after his final bronze medal in Marrakech, Morocco and since then has kept a very pristine professional record with some impressive names on his resume. As an amateur he solely represented England however was offered the chance to represent the Republic of Ireland, he held a very impressive amateur record of 76-2 with 40 of his 76 wins coming by KO/TKO. In the 2012 London Olympics he defeated Josh Taylor on a 5 round points victory to win his first ever gold medal in Olympic boxing against a fellow British boxer.

Early life

edit

James was born in Dewsbury District Hospital, West Yorkshire and was brought up in the local town of Heckmondwike where he spent his whole childhood in the same house with his mother, father and younger brother Sam. He did very well in education and passed all of his GCSE's and even went on to study A-Levels but dropped out halfway through his studies to pursue a professional career in boxing. He was very interested in combat sports more particularly boxing, he stated in an interview in Warsaw after his Bronze medal was awarded that the Rocky saga was what drew his attention to boxing as a young child, he then proceeded to seek the guidance of former featherweight boxer and coach of Cleckheaton Boxing Club Keith Tate at the young age of 11. He stuck by his roots and carried on till he was 15 years old and Keith referred him to a golden team gym where he trained 4 days a week with pure dedication after almost annihilating every sparring partner he was paired with at Cleckheaton Gym. After his referral to the Golden Team Gym in Leeds he began to step up his fighting game by officially applying for a medical license and receiving approval within 3 weeks to begin fighting in amateur bouts. He racked up a very impressive record of 24-0 (15KO) before meeting former team mate of Cleckheaton Gym, Eddie Al-Meskry and losing his first amateur bout in a 3 round split decision result. After he went to 30-1 (17KO) he faced Al-Meskry again in a rematch to come out with a points victory over 3 rounds to avenge his first amateur boxing defeat. He went all the way to 63-1 (36KO) before meeting up with fellow young Olympian Josh Taylor who he previously beat at the 2012 London Olympics, he fell to a 2nd round stoppage which saw the referee intervene as Taylor landed 13 unanswered blows to James' head area. James complained the fight was prematurely stopped and demanded a rematch which didn't happen till he turned professional.

Madden vs Taylor Trilogy

edit

Josh Taylor had proven to be a testing opponent for The Hitman as he fell to a 2nd round TKO defeat in the amateurs to him. After a lot of negotiations going wrong and issues in personal life over the couple of years they'd planned to fight. They finally negotiated a deal for August 10th 2019 to which they both entered the ring at the same weight. They clashed heads halfway through the 2nd round and both fighters agreed they couldn't continue, Madden had a strongly opened wound above his left eye from the clash and the ringside doctor had to apply 17 stitches to keep this shut which he stated "Would effect his future fights". On 14th December 2019 they agreed to a rematch but this time to take place in Scotland rather than England. Madden knew this was his only shot to get vengeance for the amateurs defeat to the talented Taylor. The rematch took place on 15th February 2020 and during his ringwalk Taylor took a microphone from one of the announcers and threw it into the crowd as a gesture of confidence to which he was issued a £5000 fine after the bout concluded. Madden managed to stay upstanding during the full 12 rounds as did Taylor but we saw James stunned a few times especially toward the later rounds where he began to show signs of fatigue. The fight was awarded a Split Decision in favor of Josh Taylor. Judge 1 and 2 both scored it 115-113 Taylor and the 3rd judge scored it 115-113 Madden. The aftermath of this fight saw both trainers in a heated exchange of shouting and punches being thrown and saw both fighters camps issued with a fine and a warning too. Josh Taylor had sent a call out to Madden regarding his first ever unified Super Middleweight Title defense as a 25-0 pro boxer. Madden snapped his hand off and instantly accepted the challenge for a fight September 2021. Despite entering the fight with a bit more experience behind them both, Josh managed to claim an 11th round knockdown on Madden which instantaneously won him the fight, without that knockdown everybody stated it would've either been a Draw or a points win for Madden.
