The Portland Bankers Baseball League was formed in April 1928 with four teams; the Federal Reserve Bank, the First National Bank, the Portland National Bank, and the United States National Bank.[1] Dick Martin, a banker from the United States National Bank, was elected president of the league.[1] Harry Dillon was hired as the official league umpire.[1] The managers of the league were Ed Opdemeyer, of the First National Bank, G. M. Purser, of the First National Bank, Ernest Kline, of the Portland National Bank, and Joe DeBoest, of the Unites States National Bank.[1] The first game took place on April 24, 1928 at Buckman Field in East Portland, Oregon.[1] Portland National Bank defeated the First National Bank by a score of 10–3.[1] The batteries of the game were Westfal and Linville for Portland National, and Harbach and Hull for United States National.[1]

In May, teams in the league started to play games with other amateur teams.[2] Ed Opdemeyer, of the First National Bank, issued a challenged to any teams who wished to compete.[2]
