Robert College International Model United Nations is an international Model United Nations Conference organized by the Robert College Model United Nations Club.

RCIMUN was organized for the first time in 2007. In 2009, more than 600 attended the conference. RCIMUN is an MUN conference that aims to stand out not only with high quality debates and resolutions, but also with innovative organizational approaches like the Green Policy which has started last year.

RCIMUN aims to gather enthusiastic participants and provide them a platform to discuss pressing global issues.

Being the first Model United Nations program adopted in Turkey, the RCMUN club has grown over the past two decades. The club functions as an extra-curricular activity with the participation of a large group of students every year, ranging from freshmen to seniors. The club members regularly attend The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) as well as six other international and national conferences, serving as delegates, student officers and press members.

Robert College

edit

Founded in 1863 by Cyrus Hamlin and Christopher Robert, Robert College is the first American college established outside the borders of the USA. It is located on the European side of Istanbul, in a campus of 65 acres, encompassing a beautiful ancient grove, extending between Arnavutkoy and Ulus. [1]

Every year, Robert College hosts a variety of activities that give students an opportunity to excel at addressing an audience, debating, and improving their command of the English language. In 2007, RCIMUN was added to this list. Every April since then, the campus has hosted this conference that takes UN as its model.

The General Assembly consists of the Human Rights Committee, Environment Committee, and Disarmament Committee.

Special Conference

edit

The Special Conference’s topic is determined according to the theme of the year.

Security Council

edit

RCSA

edit

Robert College Specialized Agencies (RCSA) is a new feature of RCIMUN 2010. Just as the Executive Board initiated the simulation of the International Criminal Court as a branch of RCIMUN last year, this year’s conference will be entertaining RCSA, which will be setting up various committees or simulations of United Nations acting organs.

RCSA will be focusing on both recent and past issues relating to the conference theme. [2]

RCMICC

edit

The Robert College Model International Criminal Court (RCMICC) is a simulation of the International Criminal Court (ICC) that runs simultaneously with RCIMUN.

Being the one and only Model International Criminal Court in Turkey, RCMICC was founded by RCIMUN in 2009. Last year, RCMICC introduced four cases: the trials of Erdemovic, Martinovic, Speer and Ruggiu which were taken from the international criminal tribunals.

The prospective applicants, who are interested in law, are encouraged to apply for one of the three positions that are prosecution, defense and judge. After the assignments of positions to specified cases, the MICC participants will work on their trials along with their teammates with the guidance of experienced trainers. Each case consists of three prosecutors, three defenders and three judges. By introducing four cases, this year, RCMICC will host 36 participants in total.

Conference By Year

edit

RCIMUN 2008

edit
Robert College International Model United Nations 2008 took place between April 9 - 12 in the Robert College campus. Around 400 participants from Germany, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan and various parts of Turkey contributed to the conference. [4]

RCIMUN 2009

edit

Robert College International Model United Nations (RCIMUN) 2009 started at 15th and ended at 19th of April. In its 3rd year, RCIMUNtook place with the participation of students from all around the world including China, U.S.A, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Czech Republic, Germany, and Italy.

For the first time, after hosting 230 participants in 2007, 350 participants in 2008, the conference has improved capacity and quality, and hosted 650 participants in 2009. [5]

RCIMUN 2010

edit

This year the conference will take place between 6-10 April 2010 on the Robert College Campus in Istanbul. More than 700 participants from over 50 schools from all over the world are expected to share an enlightening experience. [6]

RCSA 2010

edit

RCSA will be entertaining the Historical Security Council (HSC) as this year’s only Specialized Committee.

The Historical Security Council is the simulation of a previous United Nations Security Council meeting which had played a major role in reshaping the current political situation of today’s world. This year, only one major issue will be on the agenda, which means that during the five day schedule of the conference, the HSC will be simulating Security Council meetings that were held on the issue previously in chronological order.

A major difference between the SC and HSC is the attendees of the council. In the HSC, the Member States discussing the issue will be the members of the SC that year in time. This suggests that countries such as Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia or Union of Soviet Socialist States (USSR), which have different political systems and names today, might be present in the council, representing entirely different policies than their current stances. [2]

Policy Highlights

edit

Green Policy

edit

RCIMUN recognizes global warming as one of the most critical issues of today's world. Therefore, RCIMUN initiated a new tradition in 2009 by going green. Starting with the third conference RCIMUN started to be organized in an environment-friendly fashion. In 2009, throughout the conference the participants were discouraged from using print-outs unless necessary and recycled paper was provided to participants in their RCIMUN folders. In 2010, the use of recycled paper will be increased. The canvas bag sale, displaying the message "Canvas Is The New Plastic", was a big success and its practice will be continued. Also, the must-haves of any green project, recycle bins, were located all around the conference venues and participants were encouraged to use them. Electronic Forms were used for registration and paper waste during the organization phase was minimized. The green policy of RCIMUN will be carried forward in the following years with similar initiatives to promote conservation of the environment. [6]
