Prince Regent (foaled 1935) was an Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He won the Irish Grand National under top weight in 1942, but was unable to race in Great Britain for much of his career due to the Second World War. After the war he did win several races though, including the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Aintree Champion Chase. Prince Regent was owned by Jimmy Rank and trained by Tom Dreaper.

Background

edit

Prince Regent was a bay gelding foaled in 1935.[1] He was sired by My Prince, who won the Gordon Stakes in 1914. At stud he was one of the top National Hunt sires, becoming leading jump racing sire in Great Britain and Ireland five times and siring four Grand National winners, including Reynoldstown, who won the race twice.[2] Prince Regent's dam was Nemaea, a daughter of Argos. He was owned by Jimmy Rank and trained by Tom Dreaper.

Racing career

edit

On 28 March 1944 in Dublin Prince Regent carried top weight in the three-mile Baldoyle Steeplechase. As the horses approached the final fence, he was in second place, about one length behind Prince Blackthorn. However, the leader fell at the fence, leaving Prince Regent to win by eight lengths from Ruby Loch.[3]

His first race in England came on 15 December 1945 in the Bradford Chase at Wetherby. He won the race by half a length. By this time he was favourite for the 1946 Grand National and was considered by some to be the best steeplechase horse in training.[4]
