Highways in Oman are roads designed for high speeds that can vary in many ways. There two types of highways in Oman, routes and expressways with the main difference being that routes can vary from dual carriageways with up to six lanes to single carriageway with only two lanes. Some routes feature landmark roundabouts, one of the more famous landmark roundabouts is Burj Al Sahwa. On the other hand, expressways are always fully controlled-access highways. There are no toll roads in all of Oman.

History

Before 1970, Oman only had 3 kilometers of paved road but that all changed when the Omani coup d'état occurred in 1970. The coup launched an economic revolution in the country. This economic revolution mostly started with improving the road network in Oman and connecting all of the governorates of Oman together.
