The splendid alfonsino was first scientifically described in 1834 by Richard Thomas Lowe.[4] Its generic name comes from Greek, though the original meaning of the word Beryx is unclear. It may have been the name of a species of fish. Its common name, splendens, is comes from the Latin word meaning "shining" or "brilliant."[3]
