User:Dolsonreferee/Referee Magazine

Referee Magazine is an American magazine owned by Referee Enterprises, Inc. It is the only monthly magazine dedicated to covering the officiating industry in its entirety. Referee has been published continuously since 1976 and serves a core audience of sports officials from Youth to Professional levels. Veteran and new officials alike get the magazine every month for critical information to educate and succeed in their avocation. Every issue is filled with the latest breaking officiating news, up-to-date rules information and interpretations, special features on relevant issues like health, legal and financial matters, plus profiles and interviews with the top personalities in officiating.

History

edit

Referee Magazine was begun by Barry Mano in 1975 with the first issue appearing in 1976 as a bimonthly. Mano is from an officiating family and he himself was a basketball official for 23 years before retiring. In 1978 the magazine was switched to monthly publication. The mission of the magazine at its founding was to increase and diffuse officiating knowledge, to provide its readers with officiating content not available elsewhere. To the current day this mission drives the editorial decisions at the magazine. After 35 years of continuous publication Referee is now considered "the voice of sports officials."

Innovations

edit

To show rules in action and to easily express proper mechanics Referee developed several styles of illustration that eventually resulted in the creation of their proprietary PlayPic® and MechaniGram® graphics. These detailed pictures are now used in every edition of Referee Magazine as well as in instructional manuals published by Referee, the Collegiate Commissioners Association, the National Federation of State High School Associations and the California Basketball Officials Association.

Accolades

edit

A Referee magazine feature story was selected in the Honorable Mention category for the book The Best American Sports Writing: 2008. “If You Take Us Back, We Will Come,” which chronicled the up-and-down careers of three professional umpires, was selected. It appeared in Referee in September 2007.

Notable covers

edit

A Referee cover shot taken by Barry Mano featuring female NBA referee Dee Kantner was selected by the National Geographic Society as part of their traveling exhibit on Women in Sports.

MyReferee archive

edit

In an effort to give the officiating community access to the deep wealth of content from the magazine, Referee, in partnership with ArbiterSports, created a free online archive that now contains over 13,000 articles. The archive is accessed through a free user name and password and the articles are searchable by name and topic.
