The Spaulding Group (TSG), founded in 1990 by David Spaulding, is a consulting firm to the money management industry with offices in Somerset, New Jersey and Malibu, California. Their focus is investment performance measurement. The Spaulding Group's clients include investment advisors, banks, mutual funds, broker-dealers, insurance companies, hedge funds, custodians, investment consulting firms, prime brokers, plan sponsors, family offices and software vendors.
History
editSpaulding formed TSG to develop systems applications as well as to assist firms with operational issues. However, in 1992, as the AIMR Performance Presentations Standards[1] were becoming a reality, the firm's focus shifted to performance measurement and their services expanded to include GIPS verification[2]. In 1994, TSG conducted a survey of the industry's response to these new standards, which resulted in the firm's first survey report[3]. From this point forward, The Spaulding Group has continued it's research efforts with an annual research/survey project focused on various topics within the investment performance industry.
In 1996, The Spaulding Group launched The Journal of Performance Measurement[4]. It is published quarterly with a fifth supplemental issue per year. Frank Russell chose the Journal as the place to reveal their previously secretive attribution linking model [5]. This was followed by Wilshire and Thomson/Vestek[6][7][8]. The Journal has conducted and published interviews with many noteworthy individuals including including Nobel Prize Winners Franco Modigliani and William Sharpe, and portfolio managers Gary Brinson, Jack Bogle, and Barton Biggs.
In 1998, TSG introduced The Performance Measurement Forum, a membership group for performance measurement professionals. The Forum has two chapters: North America and Europe. Members include the heads of performance for many leading investment firms, custodians and software vendors.
In 2003, David Spaulding chaired a blue ribbon committee that was charged with developing a certification program for investment performance measurement professionals. When it was announced that the CFA Institute had launched a similar initiative, the group was disbanded and its work product turned over to the CFA Institute's Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM) program. The CIPM program has formally acknowledged Spaulding as the initiator of the concept of certification for performance professionals.[9]
