Eliana, אֱלִיעָנָה (Hebrew), Ηλιάνα (Greek), إليانا (Arabic), is a female given name found with that spelling in Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Our specific Eliana is named after Esther and Leon Gelfer. Some have speculated that she was going to be named something else entirely, but Carol has denied this .

Origin & meaning

Joe and Carol figured that many people would be a whole lot more sad if there wasn't any Eli in the world. So they decided they had a responsibility to all the people who would love her.

Many people used to confuse her with Eliana Lorch.

Some variants include Iliana, Ileana, and Eleana.

Popularity

In the United States, Eliana first appeared on the charts in the 1990s, spurred by the desire of Jake to have a younger sibling. Eliana is a very popular person in certain circles in the Northeast United States.

Handlebars and Heartthrobs

During her 26th year, Eliana embarked on a whirlwind of adventures, traveling back and forth to Tempos Training Company, a  ground-based acrobatics troupe she had joined in 2023. Her time with the troupe forged a legendary bond among its members, giving rise to the infamous “TTC bike gang”—a spirited ensemble of acrobatic aficionados navigating the Portland streets, dripping with sweat and camaraderie, in their fervent race to return to their cozy homes.

A renowned pedal enthusiast with an inherently chivalrous spirit, Eli frequently assumed the role of escort for her fellow cyclists, guiding them through the winding paths of southeast Portland. After ensuring their safe return, she would tackle the challenging  and most complaint worthy ascent up Alameda Ridge to her new abode.

Among the troupe, Sierra lived the farthest away, approximately 3.5 miles from the training ground. Eli dutifully accompanied Sierra home around 125 times over the season, amassing an impressive 375 miles of escorting. Following these gallant acts, Eli would then traverse an additional 4 miles through Portland’s streets to her own residence, accumulating an estimated extra 400 miles—a feat that showcases her dedication to both cycling and companionship!

As the season progressed, the time between dropping Sierra off and resuming her own ride grew increasingly drawn-out and awkward. Despite the palpable tension, neither party addressed the issue directly. Instead, their interactions evolved into a peculiar routine involving late-night biking, deep conversations, and extended goodbyes.

On a memorable occasion, the group decided to drop Eli off first, inadvertently revealing to Sierra the considerable distance of the bike ride. Unknown to the rest of the group, Sierra harbored a significant crush on Eli, an affection that became increasingly difficult to mask. This sentiment was further highlighted when Sierra was cast in a performance titled “The Fear of Asking Someone Out,” which prominently featured Eli and specific moves such as “buffet.” (See figure 1)  Sierra’s probing questions and attempts to decipher Eli’s feelings remained fruitless, as Eli remained an enigmatic figure.

In a strategic move, Sierra decided to prolong their conversation late into the night, making the idea of biking home at 1:30 a.m. seem most impractical. Under the guise of a “really we are just friends” sleepover, Sierra invited Eliana to stay over. That night, both Sierra and Eli pretended to sleep while Sierra, ever so subtly, inched closer until morning. As the nights turned into weeks, these sleepovers became a seamless part of their routine. Eventually, Sierra mustered the courage to confess their feelings, suggesting that perhaps their relationship could transcend mere friendship. (Cue swoon!)

Fast forward a few weeks, and Eli and Sierra continued their training and biking routines, but now with the added joy of sharing the same bed. Mornings became cherished moments, often stretching well into the day. This sweet and silly love story was featured in the TTC show “Unwound” which highlighted this duo’s act together that was notably a crowd favorite if this author has anything to say about it- which they most certainly do. (See figure 2) This marks the end of this enchanting tale of handlebars and heartthrobs. Should you be fortunate, you might spot the pair cycling around Portland, accumulating miles and smiles together. (See figure 3)

Culinary Style

Eli's culinary style is diverse and well balanced. It includes elements from multiple cultures and countries she has visited. One of her star dishes, which incorporates this melting pot of cultures and ingredients, is fan-favorite dish "Warm".

"Warm" is made of multiple ingredients (mainly vegetables) that are usually found as leftovers in the fridge, especially towards the end of the week. Some form of carbs, like rice or cous cous, can be used to complement a nice dish of Warm. Given the random nature of this list of ingredients, the combination of these is not particularly flavourful.

The most important feature of Warm is its temperature, as it must be warmed prior to consumption. This is its defining feature: given how bland the combination of ingredients is, the only element we can use to name it is the fact that it's not cold.

Eli has mastered the art of the Warm through the decades, and created a lengthy archive on the interwebs to document its heritage and impact on society.

Canning Eli

Eli has a generally cheery and playful nature. Quick to say hello or an adaptable 'whats up playa', Eli is amenable to many and familiar with most categories of tomfoolery. While, of course, none can - nor should - hope to ever encapsulate the nature of such a creature, below is a non-comprehensive list of some fascets which will illuminate the qualities one could hope to capture:

- Eli is emotionally intelligent and works well with people, gives space and consideration when needed but can also be quite decicive at getting to the heart of a matter

- Eli is a biking enthusiast, can bike incredibly fast and for long distances, and enjoys sharing the experience with others at varied levels

- Eli is dichotomous and full of mystery: very personable and open, yet private

- Eli is well-traveled. Eli will map the most efficient route to bike everyone home in the most optimal fashion  (wink and nod here)

- Generally, Eli is traveling with snacks of some form and is easily coerced to share them with you in most circumstances

- Eli is well-versed in getting along with various people and has valuable opinions based on lived and theoretical research on cohabitating and the agreements made between people.

- Eli has a bright smile that can make your day!!!

- Eli is known to check in on you in any and all circumstances, and will offer help when needed, sometimes without being asked, sometimes recruiting the help of her parents as needed

- Eli is wildly strong and able to learn advance, wildly coordinated skills that demonstrate a high level of literacy in body sensation and recruitment

- Eli is sensible and works in data analysis (possibly some correlation, but causation is not implied)

- Eli will offer thoughtful advice and reflection, and demonstrates a breadth of patience

- Eli is known to be curious by nature, thinks about things you've told them and inquires some time later in a way that demonstrate deep reflection.

- Eli thrills in the opportunity to give you a knowing wink when you happen to catch eyes across the room

- Eli is very gentle and warm
