The Wheel Abrasion Experiment (WAE) was a material science experiment conducted during NASA's Mars Pathfinder mission. It studied surface wear on the wheels of Pathfinder's Sojourner rover to measure the effects of Martian soil abrasion. Data collected by the WAE were used in the design of future Mars surface exploration missions.[citation needed]
