Conception and development edit

It's only that one that I really, really, really care about in terms of its remake value. So it puts me in the situation of writing both the beginning and the end of Pinhead at the same time - 'In my end is my beginning... ' I'm excited about it - actually it'll be kinda cool to revisit it once and see if there are things we can do to it which will make it significantly better.

—Clive Barker, October 2006[1]

In October 2006, Clive Barker announced that he had been contacted by rights holder Dimension Films to write and produce a remake of Hellraiser, which he had adapted from his novella The Hellbound Heart in 1987. He stated that he had no desire to direct the remake, having directed the original, but was excited for the story to be retold with a bigger special effects budget.[1] He planned to write the film after finishing work on The Scarlet Gospels, a novel depicting his conclusion to the Hellraiser mythos, and wished to bring back actor Doug Bradley in some capacity while introducing a different iteration of Pinhead.[2] In November 2006, it was reported that Anthony Diblasi and Joe Daley would serve as co-producers, with Richard Saperstein and Matthew Stein overseeing production.[3] In March 2007, Barker stated that his script treatment for the film had been approved by Miramax, adding that "they want a bit more Hellraiser mythology, which is music to my ears - it's the first time I've ever heard that request!"[4] French collaborators Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo were hired to write and direct, after Barker and Dimension Films chairman Bob Weinstein were impressed with their work on the horror film Inside.[5][6]

Barker said that the film would not be a "'remake' remake", but would instead offer a fresh interpretation of the story. Maury and Bustillo were enthusiastic to have Barker on board, but he stated that the extent of his involvement would depend on the production locations.[2] His treatment consisted of 40 pages, reimagining the events of the first Hellraiser film. As with the original, the plot focused on Frank Cotton's killing spree as he attempts to escape the Cenobites after opening the Lament Configuration. It retained the story of Larry, Julia, and Kirsty moving into the house on Ludovico Street, while featuring a returning Chatterer and introducing brand new Cenobites – the Carver, the Cage, and Lazarus. In the treatment, Kirsty makes a deal with the Carver after being captured by the Cenobites, offering to lead them to Frank in exchange for her freedom. The Carver agrees, and the climax of the film would have had them recapturing Frank and transforming him into a more vicious incarnation of Pinhead against his will. This Pinhead maintains his past memories as Frank Cotton, and ultimately betrays the other Cenobites to continue pursuing Kirsty.[7][8]

The film was scheduled for a release date of September 5, 2008 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and The Weinstein Company under the title Clive Barker Presents: Hellraiser.[9] It was later delayed to January 9, 2009, before being postponed again to an undetermined 2009 date. Bob and Harvey Weinstein were dissatisfied with Maury and Bustillo's script and had chosen to seek out other screenwriters.[10][11][12][13] In February 2008, it was announced that Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan were hired to rewrite the film, as Maury and Bustillo planned to begin production in spring of that year.[14] By April 2008, Maury and Bustillo had stepped down from the project due to creative differences with the studio.[2][15][16]
