Observation balloons where a big part in World War One. The observation ballon is a big ballon filled with hydrogen. It was used to spot artillery spotting and intelligence gathering. It had a basket attached to the bottom of it where people stood and looked at enemy. [1]The people on the balloons had to be ready to parachute off because of the enemy you shoot them down. The operators would send signals by flags or by radio because they did not want to come down every time they found something out, it would waste time. Lastly if they did not have these balloons if would have been a major disadvantage in the war, they wouldn't be able to see the enemy's territory.[2]
