Nocturnal penile tumescence
editReverted text:
Because a male erection can inhibit urination[1], it is sometimes believed that the beneficial side effect of NPT reducing the likelihood of nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting) may be a reason that the relationship between a full bladder and NPT evolved [2], however there is no direct evidence to support this idea. Given that females have a similar phenomenon called nocturnal clitoral tumescence, which has not been shown to limit nocturnal enuresis, prevention of nocturnal enuresis is not likely to be an evolutionary pathway to the development of NPT.[3]
Suggested text:
Despite the reasonably common belief that NPT may have developed to inhibit nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting) this is currently considered unlikely, in part because females have a similar phenomenon called nocturnal clitoral tumescence [4].
