Pedro José Arce y Fagoaga (San Salvador, 28 August, 1801-Sonsonate, 3 April, 1871) was Alcalde Mayor of Sonsonate and later was Provisional President of El Salvador as vice president in 1843.
Biography
editPedro José Arce y Fagoaga was born in San Salvador in 1801, the son of Antonia Fagoaga and Bernardo José de Arce. Among his brothers, the hero and 1st President of Central America, Manuel José Arce y Fagoaga stands out. Both brothers were descendants of Sancho de Barahona "el Viejo" who accompanied Hernán Cortez and Bernal Díaz del Castillo. One of the direct descendants of Pedro José Arce y Fagoaga is actor and costume designer, Raoul Fernández who lives in Paris.
He was the Alcalde Mayor of Sonsonate, being the one who chose the Intendancy of San Salvador to unite the territory of the Sonsonate; he was present at the meetings during which the first constitution of the state of El Salvador was drafted.
On 20 June, 1841, President Juan Lindo provisionally handed over the presidency to him as designated senator, a position he held until the 28th of the same month and year in which President Lindo resumed the presidency; later he was vice president of the Republic of El Salvador during the presidency of Juan José Guzmán. In 1843, Juan José Guzmán handed over the presidency to him after his resignation, later handing it over to provisional president Fermín Palacios.
