Mal Lees is most famous for co-hosting and producing the radio comedy show Club Veg with Vic Davies on Triple M in Sydney, Australia both in 1988-1992 and again 10 years later from 1998 - 2002.
Early Life
editMal was born Malcolm Anthony Lees on February 11, 1956 in Narrandera, NSW, Australia. He attended St Joseph's Primary School in Narrandera followed by Christian Brothers High School in Lewisham. Whilst attending Christian Brothers, his elective subject was pianoforte music which he studied and underwent exams, at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Eventually he transferred to the syllabus of the Trinity College of Music in London.
Career
editClub Veg recorded the highest 7pm-10pm results in Australian radio history in the early nineties and in the late nineties, Club Veg was the first show to break John Laws’ long reign over the 9am-12 Noon slot, beating him twice. The show was awarded a 1987 New York Radio Comedy Award and the Australian RAWARD (Radio Award, now known as an ACRA) in 1990 for Best On-Air Team. Mal produced the two Club Veg albums, namely “Members & Guests & Things” and “We Suck”, a collection of their popular ‘Sucked In’ calls.
In between the two stints at Triple M with Club Veg, Mal became Program Director at the then Triple M Perth (now 96fm) and hosted the Two Dogs Breakfast Show and national sports show, Swipe with former Olympic swimmer, Neil Brooks. In 2003 Mal became Breakfast Presenter & Program Director at C91.3FM in Campbelltown for 3 years.
Mal is currently co-hosting the Mal & Luke Drive Show on 102.9 Hot Tomato on the Gold Coast.
Personal life
editMal lives on the Gold Coast, Queensland. He and his wife Lisa have a daughter, Matilda born 2002.
