Icia (아이시어; A-isi-eo; stylized as ICiA) is a South Korean girl group formed in 2015. It first debuted as SIDA (사이다; Sa-ida), then changed name to Icia in 2016.

2015–2016: Debut, name change and Time Bomb edit

After being revealed through JTBC's Hidden Singer,[1] SIDA (acronym of Sparkel Imotal [sic] Delight All, meaning "the eternal light that cheers everyone") debuted on 19 October 2015 with the digital single "It's You", which was composed and arranged by monster no.9, and written by singer-songwriter JC Ji-eun;[2] Hwang Hae-won, CEO of the group's label, Two L Company, reportedly participated in the writing as well.[2] The members were selected from the agency's dance team TwoL (투엘), which had been active since 2012 performing covers of sexy songs.[3][4][5][6]

On 5 November, SIDA won the Rookie Girl Group Award at 2015 Proud Korean Awards,[7][8] and on 24 December, it was honored the Most Popular Girl Group of the Year Award at 2015 Best 100 Koreans Awards, two ceremonies hosted by the Korean Newspaper Reporters Association and the Korean Press Association to award exemplary figures who promote the image and the culture of the Republic of Korea domestically and abroad.[9]

The group had debuted with five members, Seona, Yuri, Seonmi, Yeri, and Arin. Following the departure of first Arin, then Yuri, on 14 February 2016 SIDA added a new member, Hyunah, and announced it would have continued activities as a quartet.[10] Hyunah came from dance performance group Black Queen, which debuted in 2012 after four years of cover dances.[10] On February 22, the group re-released "It's You",[11] and on February 28 it won the K-pop Award at the 2016 People Who Lighten Korea Awards.[12][13]

On April 9, 2016, the quartet started introducing itself as Icia,[14] and Seonmi and Yeri adopted the stage names of Backjo and Leeae respectively. On May 9, Icia released a new song, "Time Bomb" (타임밤), along with an accompanying music video.[15][16] The track, which was released digitally and offline through the distributor Naturally Music,[17] has a sexy concept with an "experienced girlfriend feeling", and expresses the emotions accumulated in dealing with the opposite sex.[15] "Time Bomb" was promoted from May 10 to June 1 on The Show, Show Champion, and Show! Music Core, and the tearing of the lap skirt worn by the members, which is one of the main points of the coreography and the symbol of the sexy woman that emerges from the youthful girl, sparked attention.[15][18]

Hyunah ceased her activity with the group in October; she was briefly replaced by another girl, Yuni, who left the group by the end of the year together with Seona.

2017–2018: Line-up changes, Sad Heel and Are You Kidding? edit

Two new members, Hari and Yeowoobi, started performing with Backjo and Leeae on 23 April 2017 and were officially introduced to the public in June;[19][20] "Time Bomb" was also re-released to include their voices.[21] Hari was an actress, while Yeowoobi had already been active in dance group Black Queen from 2012 to 2016. In the same month, it was reported that Thai music label Lazerfact invited the group to Thai musical festivals and suggested a Thai release of an album,[22] but the deal fell through.

The group was supposed to make a comeback in September 2017 with the new single titled "Sad Heel" (새드힐),[23] but the release was delayed as Backjo left Icia in August. On October 1, Icia's labelmate group Switch announced the departure of member Dooyoo at the end of that day's schedule and her entrance in Icia as Hyogyeong.[24] "Sad Heel" was in the end released on November 3.[25][26] The song is a funky music piece produced by composer duo Two Seasons, and features Hyogyeong self-written rap.[26] Unlike "Time Bomb", which showed an exciting and youthful sexy, "Sad Heel" utilizes a static yet alluring sexy, and its sad and graceful concept aims to express the charm of an attractive woman who has lost her lover.[27] "Sad Heel" was promoted from November 28 to January 5 on The Show and Music Bank, and starting from this release Yeowoobi changed stage name to Nayoon.[26]

On April 18, 2018, DAM Entertainment announced via a post, later deleted, on the group official Facebook that Hari and Leeae had left Icia and that the agency intended to file a lawsuit against them for unilateral contract termination. Their places were filled by Vandi and Youmin, who joined Icia on May 2 at the KCBL Celebrity Basketball Competition.[28] Vandi had released 14 singles under the stage names Panini and Blue Berry since 2011, and had promoted with girl groups Scarlet, Pocket Girls and Cupid from 2014 to 2016;[29] Youmin had already performed with the rest of the group in September 2016 before Hyogyeong joined. Icia then enjoyed mediatic exposure with the announcement of former member Seona's pregnancy and wedding in November.[30][31][32] In the meantime, on November 17, Icia made a comeback with "Are You Kidding?" (내가 없냐), an EDM track previously released in 2014 as "Hate You" by girl group Delight before their disbandement,[33][34] and of which Icia had been performing covers ever since 2015.

2019–present: Cheoeumcheoreom dance team edit

On February 8, 2019, DAM Entertainment announced via Facebook that Hyogyeong had decided to leave Icia after the contract expiration, and that CEO Hwang Hae-won had left to estabilish a new company, taking Icia with him.[35] On April 27, all official accounts were deleted, and Icia's fan cafè and social media accounts were turned private.

Nayoon and Youmin were later joined by two other girls and, at the beginning of June, started attending festivals as Cheoeumcheoreom (Korean: 처음처럼; lit. "like the first time") dance team under Illusion Entertainment, performing "Are You Kidding?" and dance covers.[36]

In August 2020, the quartet performed at Miss Grand Korea with a changed line-up consisting of Nayoon, Gayoung, Yoojin and Yoonmi.[37][38]
