I, Cassidy Helms, am a journalism and Spanish student at the University of Southern Indiana. I come from the southern Indiana, small town of Montgomery, Indiana, located in Daviess County. My home was situated in the middle of two small towns in the Daviess County area, Cannelburg and Alfordsville. One of the towns was in Barr township, and the other in Reeve. Thus, I attended Barr-Reeve High School where I participated in tennis, volleyball, and Student Council, graduating as class valedictorian in 2012.

My mother's background was heavily Amish as she grew up in the Daviess County area, which is known for its heavy Amish population. My father's family is from the Spencer County, Indiana area and is dominantly Christian. However, he grew up in the Daviess County area where he and my mother both attended Barr-Reeve High School, met, fell in love, and were married. Both attended the University of Southern Indiana between 1985 and 1989. My mother recieved her associates degree in business in 1987 and my father graduated with a B.S. in civil engineering in 1989. He went on to recieve a license in land surveying as his specialty.

I grew up in a Christian home as the third of four children; I have two older brothers (one who attends USI as well) and one younger. Although my mother's side of the family is Amish, I am not considered one-fourth Amish or any nonsense like some people assume. Contrary to popular belief, Amish is a lifestyle and religion and not a bloodline. I am a full-blooded Christ follower and will remain so past the day that I die.
