`Hello Cdmajava, This will be our discussion page for your adoption. Ask any questions you want by placing a question in it's own section, by titling the section using the format ==title here==, and then putting the question right below it. Please don't erase answered sections, as I would like to keep them. I will watch this page and respond as soon as possible to any of your questions.

The Basics edit

To help you start editing in Wikipedia, you should read The Five Pillars of Wikipedia, Wikipedia:How to edit a page, Wikipedia:Contributing to Wikipedia, the policies and guidelines, the editing FAQ, the tutorial, and the cheatsheet.

About me edit

I have been editing on Wikipedia since March 23, 2008. Wikipedia is a very large project and there are areas that I have not been involved with or have only limited knowledge, so I may not know the answer to all of your questions. But I will do my best to help you to learn the basics and hopefully make your editing experience more enjoyable. I am usually online most of the day Monday - Friday with lesser online time during the weekends.

Intro Survey edit

If you could, please answer these questions to the best of your ability. The more information you give me, the more I'll be able to help you find a good place to get started. Naturally, don't spill your life story - remember this is still the internet, and anyone could read this page. So, if you don't feel comfortable answering something, don't worry, just skip it.

  • What subjects interested you in school? History, English, Math, Sports, etc.?
  • If you currently hold a job, what do you do? If not, what would you like to do?
  • Where do you live? (For privacy reasons, please don't be too specific. I'm just looking for country and/or state/province. If you happen to live in a large city, go ahead and include that if you want, but otherwise don't post your hometown.)
  • Are you good at reviewing other people's work (such as for grammar, spelling, style, or for grading)?
  • Are you comfortable using Wikimarkup yet, or do you still need some time getting it to work?
  • What do you expect your online editing frequency to be? A few pages every day, on the weekends only, online every few days, etc.

Tasks for you to do edit

The best way to learn about Wikipedia is to really do some editing. But Wikipedia is more than just editing articles so please go the my Adoption Center page and specifically take a look at the Adoptee Tasks section. You will see a list of tasks that I would like you to perform. These will hopefully help you learn some things about wikipedia. After each task you will copy your diff results here.

Questions edit

And please do not hesitate to ask any general questions about wikipedia. I will try to either answer them or direct you to the best place to get them answered. --Captain-tucker (talk) 19:33, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Survey Says...!!! edit

In school, I like History, Science, and Tech courses (such as Web Design, Drafting [which is both manual and tech]. I am currently looking for a job. Though someday, I want to either own an architecture firm, work as technical designer, or be a teacher. I live in the United States, Florida. I am good at reviewing others work. I'm not that comfortable with Wikimarkup yet, I still prefer HTML over it. My online editing frequency, is (excluding unforeseeable circumstances) a few hours every day, which would give me the rate of a few pages a day; depending on how big the pages are.

My hobbies and interests are model building, swimming, reading, antique weaponry, and computers. I love mythological creatures, such as dragons and fairies.

My favorite book series are the Inheritance Cycle and the Artemis Fowl series, not to mention Star Wars, Star Trek, anything Sci-fi, and legendesque. You name it, I've probably read it. cdmajava There are always possibilities... 20:25, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

First Task edit

Why don't you give the first task a try, perhaps you can look through some of the your favorite novels. I noticed that Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony has no references, Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox does not have any critical reviews, I tagged The Artemis Fowl Files, Foaly, Mulch Diggums, Trouble Kelp, Opal Koboi, Minerva Paradizo, Lower Elements Police, The Lower Elements, The Book of the People,Gnommish and Fairy (Artemis Fowl) for not having any references. One of the difficult things about writing about fiction is finding reliable sources that will allow the novel to meet the notability requirements of WP:BK, usually this section: The book has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial published works whose sources are independent of the book itself. This can usually be met by reviews published by newspapers or more likely magazine/journals. One resource that I have found very useful is the databases provided by my local public library. Most libraries have access to the EBSCO database service. I would recommend checking your local library to see if they have any 'database' access on their web site, usually you just need to login with your library card number. You can usually find reviews in the EBSCO database not available via a google search. If you can not find any references for novels why not try looking through the unreferenced category given in the task. Every once in a while I enjoy just going through one of those categories and finding references for random articles. You can learn some interesting facts. And please do not hesitate to ask any questions here. --Captain-tucker (talk) 01:55, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

I don't have full access to the internet. And my school has most source site blocked.Cdmajava; Darn sig didnt wanna work 05:59, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
That takes half the fun out of wikipedia. I will try and spend some time in the next day of so looking through your past edits to see what you have been doing. One thing that might be interesting for you is to take a look at the lesson on AfD's, User:Captain-tucker/Adoption_Center/3, you might want to give this a try. Let me know if you have any questions on anything. BTW, I am just finished listening to The Sword of Shannara on audiobook and just started The Elfstones of Shannara. --Captain-tucker (talk) 20:37, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
ITs a good book, isnt it? I think it differs a little from the actual book though. Cdmajavatalk

Deletion sorting edit

The second task I suggested that you perform is learning about the WPAFD process. Here are some pages that you might want to put on your watch list. Most editors put their AfD listing on its deletion sorting category, here are some the might match your interests. If you watch some of these AfD discussions you can learn the important aspects of notability and perhaps be able to save articles from deletion that you feel are important to remain in wikipedia:

A full list can be found here: WP:DSL --Captain-tucker (talk) 01:04, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Here is something for you to look at edit

That a look at this WP:AFD - Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vulcan starships, make sure that you read through WP:DEL, WP:N and WP:AADD first.  --Captain-tucker (talk) 09:58, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

I've already looked at it, I'm nuetral on it. I think it should both go and stay. It should go becuase there are not enough refs. I think it should stay becuase it CAN be improved upon if given more information, more refs, and that it is currently a stub article. Cdmajavatalk  22:01, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
The problem is that in realilty there are probably no secondary sources to provide references for the article, I could not find any. If that is the case then what should be done with the article?  Delete or merge and if merge where?--Captain-tucker (talk) 11:51, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
It should be merged into the page Vulcan (Star Trek). Since the merging page is about Vulcan spaceships, there should be a section about Vulcan Spaceflight/Development (history). Cdmajavatalk  21:23, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

A couple new AFD's edit

Anything you might want to give an opinion on:
