Warwick Dunnett (born December 29, 1955) is a Boeing 747 Captain with a large U.S.-based cargo company, and author of Poker Wizards (ISBN 9781580422277), a collection of strategies, insights, and tactics by poker champions, written specifically about no-limit hold’em tournaments.

Born in Australia, Warwick began his flying career as a bush pilot in 1975 and in 1981 started flying for Ansett Airlines of Australia. From 1989 to 1991 he flew for Malaysian Airlines and in 1992 decided to alter course and pursue a career on Wall Street. Warwick worked as a Financial Consultant for four years with Merrill Lynch and then later purchased a seat on the New York Futures Exchange where he was a floor trader for two years until finally succumbing to an overwhelming desire to return to the skies again in 1998 when he was offered a position as a 747 Captain.

In 2003, Warwick began his pastime as a semi-professional poker player when he won a major Limit Hold’em tournament on an online site, then later won a $13,000 entry package into the Australian Poker Championship Main Event.

By 2005 prize winnings from poker rivaled his income as a professional pilot when he won $85,000 (Aus.) for a 6th place finish in the “Aussie Millions” and then went on to acquire a package entry to the World Series of Poker main event worth $13,000 and an additional three more entries to the 2006 and 2007 Australian Championships in Melbourne, valued at $33,000.

Current Activities

edit

Warwick’s first book, Poker Wizards, was published in 2008 (Cardoza Publishing). It is a compilation of strategies and tactics by some of the top poker champions. Each chapter is written by a different professional poker player who gives his or her insight into different aspects of the game, such as tournament strategy, specific hand strategy (A-A, K-K, etc.), tells, cash game strategy, etc. Contributors include Daniel Negreanu, Dan Harrington, Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, Marcel Luske, Kathy Liebert, T.J. Cloutier, Mel Judah, and Mike Sexton. Also contributing is a non-poker player, kinesics specialist, Marc Salem, who explains how to interpret and recognize physical gestures and “tells”.

Personal Life

edit

Warwick now resides in San Francisco with his wife and two young children. When not away flying, he stays close to home and avoids the rigors of the tournament circuit, preferring to primarily play online and in local cash games so he can spend as much time as possible with his family. Fueled by a desire for a greater understanding of poker and a deep passion for the game, Warwick sought out answers to a selection of poker’s most difficult questions — questions that are now answered by some of the world’s best players in his book: Poker Wizards.
