Family and early life edit

Ri's father Ri Tae-sun was a nuclear physicist.[2] Her mother, Song Hye-rang, is the older sister of Kim's late mistress Song Hye-rim. Her elder brother Ri Han-yong, also a defector, was shot to death by assailants widely suspected to be North Korean agents.[3][4] According to her brother, she was skilled at English and French even before her defection, and began serving as Kim Jong-il's personal interpreter in 1988.[5]
