The idea came in the early 1950s for a new plan for Third World War and came up with the award in the very first time. The award was planned to be be awarded for heroic distinction and for heroic feets in defending the Hungarian People's Republic. The plan was kept until the Hungarian Revolution of 1956,until 1964 the award was a third world war prototype with several unknown designs to be taken, the designers were Ágnes Makai,Gergely Sallay,József Sólyomi and these unknown designs were realsed in the book called "Strictly Confidential!War awards of the Hungarian People's Republic".First designs were similiar to the final publication, except the golden star was supposed to be made out of lower quality to be excepted to the standards of Rákosi era and for the early standards of Kádár era which was pretty early, the award had no pin nor screw because it was pretty much not decided to be finalized, the first early awards were supposed to be the same as the Hero of the Soviet Union with some minimal changes(ribbon, star, shine and etc.).[4]The award was delayed since Lajos Czinege disagreed to release the award for only the space flight and Imre Katona,Member of the National Assembly (Hungary)tried to correct him that the award won't be only for the cosmonauts which he was convinced the accept the April 20 1979 conviction of the release of the Hero of the Hungarian People's Republic.

Towards to release(1964-1979)

edit

In 1964,it was defenetly that the award will be released after several eastern bloc countries adopting their own Hero titles. The award was supposed to be released by 1969 to comemmorate the 20th anniversary of the Hungarian People's Republic, the plan was shut down since the award was still not finalized, although prototypes and test models were produced in few and were put in a "Third World War" collection box which contained all the prototype awards from 1964 that were supposed to be released with the escalation of Cuban Missile Crisis which quickly ended and it was a question of time when they'll be put into actual awarding. In the early 70s,the award was finalized after a 20 year project on the award, the final samples were same as the final versions the only differences that the medal itself was made out of precious metal or lower metals so it won't eat up the state budget. In 1978,the award was planned to released with the invitation of Béla Magyari to the Interkosmos flight program.[5]

Release(1979-80)

edit

The award was finally released in May 9,1979.In June 30 1979,the official announcement to send Béla Magyari which was delayed to May 26,1980 since the cosmonauts weren't ready for the space flight[6].By 1980 January the plans changed to send Bertalan Farkas to the space and because of this Béla Magyari became a replacement for Bertalan Farkas and Béla almost left the whole program but Bertalan convinced him that they will both go to space with Valery Kubasov. In May 26,1980 the first cosmonauts of Hungary were sent to space with Valery Kubasov. The first awards were made out of precious metal with a little percent of gold and given to both Bertalan and Kubasov. These were the so-called "flight awards".[7]

Between 1980 and 1990

edit

The award had several types such as the "horsehead" type or the "PV"(State Mint),the one-sided, prismatic star bearing has a round, horizontal tab on the upper branch with a hanging ring that connects to a "V" shaped tab at the bottom of the band's metal frame. The frame is gilded. The right and left sides of the 15×20 mm, gilded metal frame, cherry-red ribbon are bordered by white and green triangles with a width and depth of 2.5 mm,the ribbon has 2 types, one that was made with machine made with thin slice of hungarian tricolour, the other one is the embroided version which has the hungarian tricolour correct and in line with the draft, made with hands and has thick tricolour. On the middle of the ribbon, there's the so-called "1957" coat of arms from 6mm of metal gold.[8]One of the Hero titles were awarded to János Kádár.After Bertalan Farkas,it became a known symbol of the Kádár era and became the most known and most highlighted award within the government and in the Hungarian People's Army since it was only received by very high ranking generals and army generals who were devoted and comitteed in their jobs and to the army with every effort. As the Rendszerváltás came, the award became illegitimate in January 24 1991 by Árpád Göncz[9] with the new constitution ousting the former awards of the People's Republic.Although it ended in a very fatal way and a very demoting way,it's legacy is still living with Bertalan Farkas being the first and nowdays only living recipents of the award. The achievement of the award is also contributed to help with the Warsaw Pact international trainings such as the DUNA 1985 training which became the most known for being the last Warsaw Pact training and also being the most advanced training with the new soviet technology influencing through the states.
