Gender pay gap amongst Attorneys

There is evidence that suggests a Gender Pay Gap exists amongst Male and Females in the Legal Profession. Lawyers, those of which are partners at a biglaw firm show a 44% divide between gendered earnings.[1] According to a Harvard University study, Women make 82% of what men make as Lawyers and Judges. Multiple factors contribute to this gender pay gap. Two of the most important ones are workplace discrimination and cultural differences between men, women, and their respective work ethics. The workplace discrimination theory implies that bosses and human resources purposely pay women less due to the fact that they’re women and seen as less capable overall.[2] The idea is that labor of women is cheapened and less valuable so they are getting paid a fair wage.[3] The theory of culture difference argues that women in the profession simply work less due to familial commitments, children, and the need to balance the life of a housewife with work.[4] In this theory, it is also found that men who have children receive bonuses and higher wages from their respective law firm because it’s believed that they are the sole breadwinner at home. Furthermore, it is believed that men tend to choose more lucrative specialties within law such as corporate law/litigation as opposed to women who have been shown to choose family law or healthcare law. This suggests that Women tend to still take on a "caretaking" role even in the pursuit of their own legal career and mobility. It must be noted that there is no consensus reached amongst theorists and social scientists as to why this gender pay gap exists. The aforementioned theories tend to get debated against each other often, indicating that each perspective regarding female attorneys receiving equal pay widely varies.
