Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series is a voice-over parody of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. The parody, created by LittleKuriboh who writes, edits and does most of the voices himself, began on YouTube and quickly spawned other Yu-Gi-Oh! "abridged" parody shows created by fans. However, these other "abridged" parody shows were not well received, and it is generally thought that the spawns’ standards paled in comparison to LittleKuriboh’s show.

It is said that LittleKuriboh is the godfather of the "abridged" parody shows on YouTube and that Yu-Gi-Oh is only the first among many other popular fan-made parodies to grace the net; most notably Naruto: The Abridged Series, Yu Yu Hakusho: The Abridged Series, TeamFourStar, and Avatar: The Abridged Series.

Most of these “abridged” parody shows are flagged and deleted, but due to popularity many fans have them saved on their computers and continue to post them again. What is more, entire websites have been dedicated to some of the more popular ones, complete with full episode downloads.

Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series is the source for popular lines such as Screw the rules, I have money!, Super special awesome, my voice gives me super strength , and In America!

The series has won Open Web Awards for Funniest YouTube Channel in 2009[1] and has been spotted in illustrations on a patent.[2]

Features edit

In this parody the main characters have catch phrases. Seto Kaiba has "Screw the rules, I have money", Yugi has "super special awesome", Joey has "nyeh" and "Brooklyn rage", Bones has "brains", Ishizu has "because shut up", and Yami Yugi/Pharoah Atem has "Mind Crush" and Téa Gardner saying "The Power of FRIENDSHIP". In the Abridged Movie, Seto Kaiba says, "Screw The Rules, I have Money," to provide comic relief.

Also, the interparallel or dark (yami) sides of Bakura and Marik Ishtar are Florence and Melvin respectively.

In this series the Kaiba Brothers appear to have parents, whom Seto fired at age 6. Yugi's Grandfather Solomon Muto has a sexual relationship with his "Black Luster Soldier" poster and usually zones out. Slifer The Sky Dragon has been renamed to Slifer: The Executive Producer and Wing Dragon of Ra to Mega Ultra Chicken.

References to the original 4Kids Entertainment English-language adaption of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, including actual lines from episodes, serve as a running gag, for example the villains in partnership with Noah Kaiba in season 3 of the parody are referred to as the five executive producers of Team 4Kids.
