The Verizon vandal edit

Extended content

The edits by the IPs listed in this section have been marked as vandalism as per the discussion at WP:ANI#Persistent IP hopping vandal. As this discussion has now been archived, updates to the list of IPs used are being made here. As per that discussion, reports were being made at User talk:KrakatoaKatie until she got sick in January. Since then, reports have been routinely made to WP:AIV.

  • Edit summary normally used: Persistent vandal discussed at ANI. See etc#The Verizon vandal for more
  • Text for WP:AIV reports:
    • IP reports - Vandalism only account. Persistent IP vandal previously discussed at ANI. See etc#The Verizon vandal for more. Standard practice is to block the IP and semi the article(s) being vandalised because the vandal will return to the page with another IP from the pool. Note that this vandal hangs onto an IP for as long as possible, so if it hasn't edited in a few hours, this does not mean that a block is not necessary. It is likely to return using the same IP as was the case with this one, which wasn't blocked because it hadn't edited for several hours
    • Alternate text where a registered account has inserted "Chanel" or "Chantelle" in addition to the text - Vandalism only account. Obviously a registered account of the IP vandal that I've reported on numerous occasions (See etc#The Verizon vandal for more) as it exhibits identical traits. Insertion of "Chanel" or "Chantelle" into articles[] was a dead give-away but also exhibits the other traits noted on my userpage, especially the wikilinking of gazillions of randomly chosen words.[] As always, standard practice is to block the account and semi the article(s) being vandalised because the vandal will return to the page with another account or another IP from the 108.32.0.0/12 pool.
    • Alternate text where a registered account has not inserted "Chanel" or "Chantelle" in addition to the text - Vandalism only, block evading account. Obviously a registered account of the IP vandal that I've reported on numerous occasions (See etc#The Verizon vandal for more) as it exhibits identical traits. The wikilinking of gazillions of randomly chosen words is a dead give-away. The account is a sockpuppet of Clarify29. (see SPI cases). As always, standard practice is to block the account and semi the article(s) being vandalised because the vandal will return to the page with another account or another IP from the 108.32.0.0/12 pool.

This is a persistent IP hopping vandal who uses sneaky vandalism. Typical traits include, but are not limited to:

  • changing random words(e.g "blond" to "light Eru brown")
  • gratuitously adding wikilinks to random words[1]
  • randomly changing individual words and wikilinking them
  • indiscriminately changing some links (eg "running gag" to "running gag")
  • changing female names to "Chanel"[2][3] or variations, such as "Chantelle". This was a common trait in the early vandalism but it has also been seen in later edits.
  • occasional use of "pickadees" in edits. (e.g. replacing "penguins" with "pickadees"[4])

The vandal has also periodically identified herself as "Gabby",[5] which has also been reflected in accounts that have been registered, such as User:729gabby. Edits adding "Gabby" to articles have also been seen.[6]

An SPI case was raised on 15 March at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Clarify29
