The painting depicts two men standing on a hillside path, who are admiring the brigth moon. The man on the left is leaning on his companion's shoulder. The scene is framed by an old oak on their right, the pine trees on the left side, and the massive boulders near the lane. The colours are very dark and dim, which is a characteristic feature of Romantic paintings. Friedrich painted sever versions of this scene; this is the third one. [1]
