{{subst:submit}}Angelika Markul, born on the 15th of December 1977, is a French-Polish artist. Known for her video installations and sculptural work, she works and lives in Paris.

Biography

edit

In 2003, she graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris, from the multimedia studio directed by Christian Boltanski. Angelika Markul is also Christian Boltanski’s moral rights holder — which prerogatives are the right of disclosure, the right of respect of the works’ integrity and the right to

authorship.

She was awarded the Sam Art Projects Prize (2012), the COAL Art and environment Prize (2016) and the Maïf Prize (2017).

At the beginning of her career, her work is noticed through the support of great French institutions, with the exhibitions I still believe in miracles at the Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain of Paris and J’en rêve at the Fondation Cartier in 2005. At the same time she starts to develop a plastic work mixing video installations and wax sculptures. Her work has since been exhibited in various cultural institutions : art centres and museums throughout the world, from Shanghai to Buenos Aires, through Warsaw and New York.

These last years, her work has been focusing of the relationship between science and fiction, in order to produce, from her video installations, a myth close to science-fiction.Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). She regularly goes to places difficult to access, considered as dangerous or completely abandoned : the area of Chernobyl, the city of Fukushima, or the Naïca’s Grottos in Mexico[1].

In 2013, Angelika Makul occupies the Orangerie du Domaine de Chamarande with a specific creation for the place, under the curating of Lauranne Germond.[2] In 2014, she presents her solo exhibition Terre de départ at the Palais de Tokyo, curated by Daria de Beauvais, representing a turning point in her career. The interests that lead her work are time, memory, Man and nature. She presents four different video installations Bambi à Tchernobyl (2014), Gorge du Diable (2013), Terre de Départ (2014) et 400 milliards de planètes (2014).

In 2018, she presented her exhibition Tierra del Fuego at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature (Paris)[3], curated by Lauranne Germon and Claude d’Antenaise. She presented a series of works around the disappearance of the amerindian Yagans people in relation to today’s disappearance of glaciers. This project appeared in the continuity of the work Mémoire des Glaciers (2017), a video realised in El Calafate where she had recorded the melting of the Perito Moreno glaciers. She regularly collaborates with scientist, especially Masaaki Kimura, geologist for her video Zone Yonaguni, realised in the south of Japan, aiming to discover a drowned monument which exact origins are unknown, as well as Steve Salisbury, archeologist for her video Marella, recorded in the surroundings of the city of Broome in Australia, in the world’s largest listed site of dinosaur tracks.

In 2020, she presented a new solo exhibition, Formule du Temps, at the Centre international d’art et du paysage de Vassivière.

Even though she does not call herself an ecologist, her work is regularly associated to ecological awareness and the notion of Anthropocene. In 2018, she was invited at the Centre Pompidou as part of the seminar What ecological transition for culture ? animated by Jean Max Colard. .

The artist is represented by the Leto Gallery (Warsaw, Poland) and Albarrán Bourdais (Madrid, Spain).

Angelika Markul also holds Christian Boltanski’s moral rights, which prerogatives are the right of disclosure, the right of respect of the works’ integrity and the right to authorship.
