EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC1 and entered its eleventh broadcasted year on 2 January 1995 with its 1074th episode, with Barbara Emile continuing her role as executive producer until Corinne Hollingworth took over in the early part of the year. EastEnders aired 157 episodes in 1995, with the the typical week comprising three half-hour episodes on BBC1, in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8.00 pm on Mondays.
Cast and characters
editMartine McCutcheon joined the cast as Tiffany Raymond, a school friend of Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer); the character debuted on 24 January.[1] Bill Treacher, who portrayed Arthur Fowler, chose to leave the show in 1995, with an exit penned for the following year. For his departure storyline, the character of Willy Roper, portrayed by Michael Tudor-Barnes, was introduced. He made his first appearance on 1 June.[2] Ted Hills, the brother of Kathy Mitchell (Gillian Taylforth), was introduced on 24 August; Brian Croucher was cast in the role.[3] Ted's children, Sarah Hills (Daniela Denby-Ashe) and Tony Hills (Mark Homer), were introduced on 7 September. Harry Landis joined the cast as Felix Kawalski on 9 November. Debbie Arnold was cast as April Branning, the "fun-loving" sister of Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson), in 1995; the character made her first appearance on 28 December.[4]
Lucy Speed chose not to renew her contract with the show in 1995; her character, Natalie Price, departed on 23 February.[5] Geoff Barnes (David Roper) was axed from the series at the end of his one-year contract; the character departed on 20 April. Michelle Joseph and Sophie Langham departed their respective roles as Della Alexander and Binnie Roberts on 16 May. Nicola Duffett chose to leave the series and requested that her character, Debbie Bates, was killed off. Debbie made her final appearance on 22 June when she was killed in a hit-and-run incident.[6] Letitia Dean quit her role as original character, Sharon Watts in 1995. The character departed on 6 July at the conclusion of the "Sharongate" storyline.[7] Susan Tully (who had played Michelle Fowler since the show's conception) also chose to leave the series in 1995 and Samantha Leigh Martin was subsequently axed from her role as Michelle's daughter, Vicki Fowler. Roper reprised his role for Michelle's exit storyline, in which she was offered a job in America and left Walford on 26 October.
Sam Mitchell was reintroduced to the series, with Daniella Westbrook continuing in the role. The character made her return on 25 July.[8] Following his 1994 temporary departure, Frank Butcher (Mike Reid) was reintroduced and the character returned on 25 December.

editDuring 1995, EastEnders aired three 30-minute episodes each week, typically in a time slot of 8.00 pm on Mondays, and 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The episodes were broadcast on BBC1. A weekly omnibus edition was also broadcast on Sundays. Barbara Emile continued her role as executive producer until Corinne Hollingworth took over.
